Introduction

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, the highest professional level of American football in the world. The NFL’s 17-week regular season runs from early September to late December, with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, six teams from each conference (four division winners and two wild card teams) advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament culminating in the Super Bowl, which is usually held in early February and is played between the champions of the NFC and AFC.

The league was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL considered itself a separate legal entity from the older APFA until after World War II, when it merged with that league. In 2015, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that his father had pushed for that name change because “he thought it would sound more impressive”, saying that “the word ‘professional’ immediately connotes a higher level of competence than ‘amateur’.”

Preseason

The National Football League (NFL) preseason is the period each year during which NFL teams play several not-for-the-record exhibition games before the regular season commences. Beginning with the featured Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in early August, five weekends of exhibition games are currently played in August and September (Preseason Week 1, 2, 3, 4, and sometimes 5). The start of the preseason is intrinsically linked to the date of the last playoff game, meaning that for fans wanting to attend a live game (or see one on television), it is generally necessary to wait until mid-to late August.

Regular Season

The NFL regular season usually begins in September and ends in December. Each team plays 16 games during the regular season. The NFL schedule is released in April, and the regular season usually begins the first week of September. The regular season typically ends the first week of December, but it can end as late as the second week of December if there are games being played on Monday or Thursday nights that week.

Playoffs

The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs based on regular season records.

The tournament culminates in the Super Bowl, the league’s championship game. Since 1967, the winner of the Super Bowl has received the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the head coach of the Green Bay Packers who won the first two Super Bowls.
