What NFL Team Has Never Won a Super Bowl?
Contents
Though there are a handful of teams that have yet to make a Super Bowl appearance, there is only one team that has never won the big game.
The Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have never won a Super Bowl. The team has never even been to one. In fact, the Browns haven’t won a championship since 1964, when they were the NFL champions.
The Browns’ history
The Browns have never won a Super Bowl, but they did win the NFL Championship in 1950, 1954, 1955 and 1964 – all before the Super Bowl even existed. The Browns have also appeared in the playoffs 21 times since 1950, which is more than any other team in the NFL during that time span.
The team was founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns dominated the AAFC, winning all four of their league championships. When the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1950, the Browns were absorbed into the NFL and began play in 1953.
Since then, the Browns have had their share of ups and downs. They’ve had some great teams – most notably in the 1980s under head coach Marty Schottenheimer – but they’ve also struggled at times. In recent years, they’ve been one of the worst teams in the NFL, but they appear to be on the upswing under new head coach Freddie Kitchens.
The Browns’ Super Bowl appearances
The Cleveland Browns have appeared in the NFL Championship Game/Super Bowl eight times, but have never won. They are one of only five teams to never win a Super Bowl, along with the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings.
The Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions have never won a Super Bowl, but they have come close. They have appeared in four NFC Championship Games, but have lost all four. The Lions have also had some of the best players in NFL history, including Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson, and Matthew Stafford.
The Lions’ history
The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit. Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team began play in 1929 as an independent professional football team. For the 1930 season, the Spartans formally joined the NFL as the other area independents folded because of the Great Depression. Despite success within the NFL, they could not survive financially and ultimately relocated to Detroit for the 1934 season. The Lions have won four NFL Championships, tied for 9th overall in total championship wins, although they have yet to win a Super Bowl.
The Lions’ Super Bowl appearances
The Lions have made it to the Super Bowl three times, but have never won. Their most recent appearance was in 1991, when they lost to the Washington Redskins by a score of 37-24. Their other two appearances came in 1952 and 1957, both of which resulted in losses as well.
The Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are an American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team began play in 2002 as an expansion team after the NFL awarded the city of Houston an expansion franchise. The Texans have never won a Super Bowl in their franchise history.
