What NFL Games Are On?

Introduction

The National Football League (NFL) regular season begins on the week following the first Monday of September (i.e., the Tuesday following the Labor Day holiday) and ends on the week before the first Monday of January (i.e., the Saturday following New Year’s Day). From 1966 until 1982, including eleven seasons from 1974 to 1984, the NFL schedule consisted of fourteen regular season games played over a fifteen-week period beginning on Labor Day weekend and ending late in December or early in January. With the expansion of regular season play from fourteen to sixteen games beginning in 1978, and continuing through 2020, the NFL schedule now consists of sixteen regular season games played over a seventeen-week period beginning on Labor Day weekend and ending in late December or early January.

The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs by having one of the better won-lost records or by winning their conference championship game. The four division winners within each conference are seeded 1–4 based on their overall won-lost record, with tiebreakers used as needed to break any ties for playoff positions—for example, if two teams had identical records and strength-of-schedule ratings, whichever team had scored more total points would be awarded the higher seed. The two wild card teams within each conference are seeded 5 and 6. In addition to these playoff berths, an additional team within each conference is given a Playoff berth by winning their conference’s championship game: these are seeded 1 and 2 respectively within their conferences (the Conference Championship Game losers remain seeded 4 regardless of record). The NFL does not use a fixed bracket playoff system so different teams may have home field advantage depending on how well they performed during regular season play; however, since 1975 at least one team has had home field advantage earning it by having either won or tied for first place during regular season play.[1][2]
