The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the United States. This conference and its counterpart, the American Football Conference (AFC), currently contain 16 teams each, making up the 32 teams of the NFL.
The NFC was created prior to the 1970 NFL season as a merger between the National Football League and its rival, the American Football League (AFL). Since 1970, all NFL teams that were not members of the AFC have been in the NFC. As a result of this realignment, there are now 16 AFC teams and 16 NFC teams. Each conference has been further subdivided into four divisions of four teams each: North, South, East, and West. Like the AFC, the NFC is made up of all U.S.-based NFL teams.
Since 2002, home field advantage in the NFL playoffs has gone to the team with the better record in each conference’s regular season. That team will host all playoff games in their conference until they lose or are eliminated from contention.
