Contents
We all know that the NFL is a predominantly white league, but just how white is it? We did a little research to find out.
The NFL’s Racial Breakdown
According to a study done by the University of Central Florida, the NFL is 70% black and 28% white. This leaves 2% for players of other races. This is a significant increase from the 1960s when the NFL was 95% white.
The NFL’s Racial History
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. The NFL was formed in 1921 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL consists of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC).
The league’s racial demographics has changed significantly since its inception. In the early years of the NFL, African American players were not allowed to compete. This changed in 1946 when Geraldy Anderson became the first black player to sign a contract with an NFL team.
Today, nearly 70% of NFL players are African American. This is in contrast to the league’sracially makeup in 2010, when 58.9% of players were black. The percentage of white players has steadily declined over the years, and currently only 27.5% of NFL players are white.
The NFL’s Current Racial Breakdown
The NFL is currently 70% African American, while 30% of players in the NFL are Caucasian. While this may be news to some, the percentage of African American players in the NFL has been on the rise for years. The racial makeup of NFL players today is a far cry from what it was just a few decades ago. In fact, the NFL’s current racial makeup is nearly identical to that of Major League Baseball.
The NFL’s Racial Future
The NFL is a league that is 70% African American. In recent years, the league has been trying to do something about that. They’ve been hiring more African American coaches, they’re making a rule that teams have to interview African American candidates for head coaching vacancies, and they’re working on a Rooney Rule for general managers. The NFL is also becoming more diverse in other ways.
The NFL’s Racial Future
The NFL is a predominantly white league, with about 70 percent of its players being white. However, the league is becoming increasingly diverse, with the percentage of black players rising steadily over the past few decades. In 2017, about 27 percent of NFL players were black, up from 13 percent in 1987.
The league’s Hispanic population is also growing rapidly. In 2017, about 10 percent of NFL players were Hispanic, up from just 2 percent in 1987.
The NFL’s racial makeup is reflective of the overall population of the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 60 percent of the population is white, 13 percent is black and 18 percent is Hispanic.
The NFL’s racial future is likely to continue to mirror that of the country as a whole. As the U.S. population becomes increasingly diverse, so too will the NFL.
