Introduction
Thursday Night Football is back for Week 2 of the 2020 NFL season! Tonight’s matchup features the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Chicago Bears. The game is set to kickoff at 8:20pm ET on NBC.
History of Thursday Night Football
Thursday Night Football (often abbreviated as TNF, and also sometimes referred to as Thursday Night Football presented by Bud Light for sponsorship reasons) is a live television broadcast of weekly National Football League (NFL) games on CBS, NBC and NFL Network. Debuting on November 23, 2006, the telecasts are primarily shown on Thursday nights during the NFL regular season from August through December.
In 2007, NFL Network televised 13 Thursday night games during the season. NFL Network held exclusive rights to televise Thursday night games starting in 2013, when it won a five-year contract to carry the games, paying $450 million per year. CBS and NBC agreed to pay a combined $700 million per year to air eight games each on their respective broadcast networks beginning in the 2014 season. Under the contract with NFL Network, these broadcasts are simulcast on Thursday nights on CBS, NBC and the NFL Network; ESPN was originally part of this agreement but chose not to renew their simulcasting arrangement for the 2017 season pending their new Monday Night Football package, instead moving their simulcasts of TNF to ABC as part of an expanded agreement that also saw them take over broadcast rights to Monday Night Football effective with that season.
From 2006 until 2013, TNF featured eight live games each week during the NFL regular season; four were aired exclusively by NFL Network while four were simulcast on both NFL Network and one of a rotating group of broadcast partners that included ABC/ESPN, CBS or NBC. In 2014, ESPN was replaced by NBC as one of the two broadcast partners under a new five-year contract that also gave both CBS and NBC expanded digital rights to stream all TNF games online; as part of this deal—the first where all TNF broadcasts were televising across all three networks—NFL Media extended its exclusive rights package for NFLN’s in-house production team to produce all 17 regular season games regardless of which network was televising them (the title sponsor’s logos are still used during these broadcasts despite no longer holding official game broadcasting rights).
Under the new three-network contract that began with the 2014 season, which runs through 2022, TNF airs exclusively on NFL Network each week during the 17-week regular season schedule (previously it aired four exclusive games and four simulcasted games), with game telecasts also simulcast on either CBS or NBC depending on scheduling (as such, all three networks now utilize their own separate announce teams and production staffs for coverage). In total there are 16 different weeks where either CBS or NBC will air a live TNF game throughout the course of the contract; beginning in 2018 under a new two-year extension running through 2022 that was added onto the original five-year agreement between CBS/NBC and NFL Media in early 2017—in addition to continuing its existingami-dark
