Since the founding of the league, there have been numerous changes: -The league started with 10 teams and now consists of 32.

-In 1960, it absorbed three teams from another professional league, the American Football League (AFL).
-Since then, two more teams have joined via expansion: the Dallas Cowboys in 1960 and the Minnesota Vikings in 1961.
Merger with AFL in 1970
In 1970, the NFL completed its merger with the American Football League (AFL), effective for the 1970 season. The AFL’s final season was 1969, after which all of its teams became NFL teams. As part of the merger agreement, two expansion franchises were to be created for the 1970 season; these two were in addition to the 26 existing NFL franchises and 10 AFL franchises that were brought into the NFL in the merger. (Thus, the total number of NFL franchises for 1970 was 28.) These teams were originally to be awarded to Atlanta and New Orleans, but when both cities refused to accept them, they were reallocated to Memphis (which had recently been abandoned by its previous franchise) and New York City.
