NFL Coaches Fired Today
It’s that time of year again. The time when NFL coaches are getting fired. Some coaches were let go today, and some may be let go in the coming days. Here’s a list of the coaches who were fired today.
Marvin Lewis
Marvin Lewis was fired by the Bengals today after 16 seasons. He had a 131-122-3 record with the team, but failed to win a playoff game in seven tries.
Hue Jackson
Hue Jackson was fired by the Cleveland Browns on Monday, Oct. 29, after compiling a 3-36-1 record in two-plus seasons with the team. Jackson was hired by the Browns in 2016 and led the team to a 1-15 record, then followed that up with an 0-16 campaign in 2017. The Browns won their first game of 2018 against the New York Jets on Sept. 20, but Jackson was fired after the team lost its sixth straight game on Oct. 28, falling 37-21 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mike McCarthy
Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was fired today after 12 seasons with the team. McCarthy led the Packers to a Super Bowl win in 2010, but the team has struggled in recent years and missed the playoffs last season.
Reasons For The Firing
There are many reasons that an NFL coach may be fired. Some coaches are fired because they have a losing record. Others are fired because they have a winning record but their team is not performing up to expectations. Sometimes, a coach is fired due to off-field issues, such as a players’ strike or a scandal.
Poor Record
One of the primary reasons NFL coaches are fired is due to poor performance, especially if they have a string of losses or their winning percentage falls below a certain threshold. For example, Hue Jackson was fired by the Cleveland Browns in 2018 after going 3-36-1 in two-and-a-half seasons.
Other reasons coaches may be let go include behavioral issues, such as lateness or poor treatment of players and staff, and a desire by the team’s ownership to make a change in order to try and achieve better results.
Locker Room Issues
The vast majority of NFL coaching changes happen in January, right after the season ends. But every now and then, a coach will get fired during the season. Here are some of the main reasons why coaches have been fired during the season in recent years.
1) Locker Room Issues: One of the most common reasons for in-season firings is locker room issues. If a coach is losing the locker room, it’s often only a matter of time before he’s shown the door.
2) Poor Performance: Of course, poor performance is also a common reason for in-season firings. If a team is well below .500 and not showing any signs of improvement, the coach is usually the first one to go.
3) Off-Field Scandals: Unfortunately, off-field scandals can also lead to in-season firings. If a coach is caught up in a scandal that reflects badly on the team or league, he will often be asked to step down.
4) Front Office Changes: Sometimes, a new general manager or owner will want to bring in his own coach, which can lead to an in-season firing. This happened recently with the Cleveland Browns, who fired Hue Jackson midway through the 2018 season.
Owner Dissatisfaction
Owner dissatisfaction is often cited as a primary reason for NFL coaches being fired. In some cases, the owner may be unhappy with the team’s performance and decide to make a change. In other cases, the owner may simply have a different vision for the team’s future and decide to go in a different direction. Whatever the reason, when an NFL owner is unhappy with his or her head coach, it’s often only a matter of time before a change is made.
