The History of the NFL
It all started in 1869 with the first ever game of American Football between two college teams. From there, the game exploded in popularity and the first professional league was formed in 1892. The National Football League (NFL) was formed in 1920 and has been the premier American Football league ever since. This Sunday, the first game of the NFL season will be played. Let’s take a look at the history of the NFL.
The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920
The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920, between the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles in Dayton, Ohio. The game ended in a tie, with each team scoring 20 points. The Triangles were coached by Carl Storck, who would go on to become the League’s first ever president.
The NFL was originally founded as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) in 1920
On September 17, 1920, a meeting was held in Canton, Ohio to establish a professional football league. At that meeting, the American Professional Football Association (APFA) was formed with Jim Thorpe as president. The APFA began with ten teams: the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals), Chicago Bears (then the Decatur Staleys), Cleveland Indians (no relation to the Major League Baseball team), Dayton Triangles, Detroit Heralds (later traded their name for the Lions), Hammond Pros, Muncie Flyers, Rochester Jeffersons and Rock Island Independents.
The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920 between the Rock Island Independents and the St. Paul Ideals. The Independents won 20-0. Majestic Park in Canton, Ohio served as the site of that first game as well as the first annual meeting of NFL teams which took place a week later on October 10th. At that meeting it was decided that George Halas would serve as vice president and that Joe Carr would be president for at least one year because Thorpe was considered too busy with his Olympic duties to effectively lead a new professional league. Carr was nominated unanimously and became the first president of NFL on October 13th, 1920.
The 1921 season saw some big changes for the NFL including an increase in membership from 10 to 22 teams and the addition of an official championship game which was held on December 18th at Harmon Field in Akron, Ohio between the Buffalo All-Americans and the Chicago Staleys (now the Bears). That game ended in a scoreless tie and so a rematch was held ten days later at Cubs Park in Chicago (now Wrigley Field). The Staleys won that game 9-0 to claim not only bragging rights but also an impressive $1,000 prize which was a lot of money back in 1921!

How the NFL Season Works
The National Football League (NFL) season is upon us! This is the time of year when professional football teams from all over the country compete against each other in the hopes of making it to the playoffs and, ultimately, the Super Bowl. But how does the NFL season work?
The NFL season is divided into two parts: the regular season and the playoffs
The NFL season is divided into two parts: the regular season and the playoffs. The regular season consists of 16 games, played over 17 weeks. Every team plays each of the other teams in their own conference twice, and each team in the other conference once. The playoffs are a single-elimination tournament consisting of six teams from each conference. The four division winners and two wildcard teams (the two teams with the best records who didn’t win their division) advance to the playoffs.
The regular season consists of 16 games, played over a 17-week period
The regular season consists of 16 games, played over a 17-week period. Each team plays every other team once during the regular season, with one bye week for each team.
In the pre-season and early part of the season, teams play mostly non-conference opponents, although some inter-conference games may be scheduled. Later in the season, most games are against conference opponents, ensuring that every team plays every other team in their conference at least once during the regular season.
The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the regular season to determine the champion of the National Football League (NFL). Twelve teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs based on their regular season record. The playoffs are played in January and culminate with the Super Bowl, which is usually held in February and determines the champion of the NFL for that year.

The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament that culminates with the Super Bowl
The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the National Football League’s regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the tournament. Seeds are awarded in inverse order of the teams’ regular-season records, with the team with the worst record receiving the first pick, and so on. The tournament seeded then proceeds to a set number of best-of-seven series. The winners of each series advance to single-elimination Conference Championship games, with those winners then advancing to the Super Bowl, which is usually held at a neutral site that is determined years in advance.
The Super Bowl is the biggest and most important game of the NFL season
The Super Bowl is the biggest and most important game of the NFL season. It is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL). The game is usually played on the first Sunday in February. This year, Super Bowl LIV will be played on February 2, 2020, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The game is played between the champions of the two conferences of the NFL, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The AFC champion is determined by a playoff system that culminates in the AFC Championship Game. The NFC champion is determined by a similar playoff system that culminates in the NFC Championship Game.
The winner of each conference championship game then goes on to play in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is considered to be the most important single-day sporting event in all of North America. It consistently ranks as one of television’s most-watched programs annually. In 2015, an estimated 114 million people watched Super Bowl XLIX on TV.
