Who Won NFL Honors?

The National Football League handed out its annual awards on Saturday night, with some familiar names taking home the hardware. Here’s a look at who won what.

NFL Honors

The National Football League Honors is an annual awards ceremony that recognizes NFL players for their outstanding achievements on the field during the previous NFL season. This year’s NFL Honors ceremony was held on Saturday, February 6, and broadcasted live on CBS.

MVP

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) is an annual National Football League (NFL) award given to the player who is considered the most valuable in the league. The winner is chosen by a vote of NFL players, coaches, and members of the media.

Rookie of the Year

The NFL’s annual awards ceremony, honoring the best players and performances from the previous year, aired Saturday night. Here are the night’s big winners.

Rookie of the Year: Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals

Murray was drafted No. 1 overall out of Oklahoma last year, and he lived up to the hype in his first NFL season. The 23-year-old quarterback led the Cardinals to a 9-7 record, throwing for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions. He also ran for 544 yards and four touchdowns.

Comeback Player of the Year

The Comeback Player of the Year Award is given to a player who has shown persistence and dedication in returning to their sport after sustaining an injury or overcoming some other type of adversity. The award was first given out in 1992, and since then, it has been given to one player every year.

This year, the award went to Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater suffered a devastating knee injury in August of 2016 that caused him to miss the entire 2016 season. He made his return to the field this past September and played in all 16 games for the Vikings, leading them to a divisional title.

NFC

The NFC is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the world. The winner of the Super Bowl, the annual championship game of the NFL, is determined by a single elimination playoff among the top six teams in the NFC. The current NFC champions are the Los Angeles Rams.

Offensive Player of the Year

The Offensive Player of the Year is an annual National Football League (NFL) award given to the offensive player who has displayed the most exceptional performance during the regular season. The recipient is selected by a vote from a panel of offensive coaches and offensive players who make up the membership of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).

The award was first presented in 1971, and has been given annually since 1986. The most recent recipient of the award is quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the award in 2019.

Defensive Player of the Year

The National Football League Defensive Player of the Year Award is an annual National Football League (NFL) award given to the best defensive player of the year. The award was first presented in 1971 and has been given annually since then. The winner is chosen by a vote of the NFL coaching staffs. There is no formal presentation of the award; rather, the award is announced at the NFL Honors ceremony, which is typically held the day before Super Bowl Sunday.

The most recent winner of the Defensive Player of the Year Award is Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, who won in 2019. He is also a two-time winner, having previously won in 2017.

Other notable winners of the award include J.J. Watt, Lawrence Taylor, Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Ronnie Lott, Dwight Freeney, and Deion Sanders.

Coach of the Year

The 2019 Coach of the Year was Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers.

AFC

The NFL Honors are given to the best performers of the previous season in the NFL. This year’s AFC winners are:

Offensive Player of the Year

Quarterback Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens was named the 2019 NFL Offensive Player of the Year. Selected in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Louisville, Jackson is the third quarterback in Ravens history to be named Offensive Player of the Year, joining Hall of Famers Johnny Unitas (1964) and Steve McNair (2003). In his first season as a starter, Jackson led the league in rushing yards (1,206) by a quarterback and set a single-season quarterback record for rushing touchdowns (seven). He also passed for 3,127 yards and 36 touchdowns.

The big Texan took home his second Defensive Player of the Year award in as many years. The 6’5″, 289-pounder was a one-man wrecking crew in 2014, tallying 20.5 sacks, 50 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown.
