This game is now known as Super Bowl I and was followed by an additional four AFL–NFL World Championship games before halftime intermissions were added to all future games starting with Super Bowl XIX in 1985. Under their own separate rulesets, both leagues held annual championship games until they merged into a single combined league effective with 1970 AFL–NFL season after which only a single annual champion would be held during what would become a 20-game regular season where each team playing two extra preseason games starting with 1958 NFL season. Today, Thursdays are reserved for “Thursday Night Football”—an opportunity for fans to catch two live primetime match-ups that they may have otherwise missed during Sunday’s slate of afternoon games
