New balls
A new NFL football is slick and shiny, with the laces freshly waxed. The pebbled leather has a rich feel, almost like a baseball. It’s brand new, and it’s perfect.
But how much does a NFL football weigh? That’s not an easy question to answer, because the weight of a football can vary depending on a number of factors.
For example, a cold football will weigh less than a warm football. A dry football will weigh less than a wet football. And an underinflated football will weigh less than a properly inflated football.
At its official website, the NFL states that “the weight of the ball must be no less than 14 ounces and no greater than 15 ounces.” But that only tells us the minimum and maximum weight of the ball. The actual weight of a ball can be anywhere in that range.

College
college footballs can weigh as much as 5 ounces less than NFL footballs. Although both balls have the same circumference (11 inches), college balls have a lower overall weight because they are not required to be as inflated as NFL balls. The inflation of a football is measured by pounds per square inch (PSI). The PSI of a college ball is 12.5-13.5, while the PSI of an NFL ball is 13-13.5.
