The 49ers were the first major league sports franchise based in San Francisco. The name “49ers” comes from the prospectors who arrived in Northern California during the 1849 Gold Rush.
The team originally competed in Kezar Stadium before moving to Candlestick Park in 1970 and then to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, in 2014. Throughout their 70-year history, the 49ers have been one of the most successful teams in NFL history; they have won 19 division championships (the most of any team has won), appeared in 31 playoff games (second most), and have played in 15 NFL Championship Games (third most).
