William Heffelfinger, a former Yale College student, was paid $500 (the equivalent of about $13,000 today) to play for the Allegheny Athletic Association. The game was played in Pittsburgh and ended in a scoreless tie.
The first college football game
On November 6, 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played what was billed as the first college football game. However, it wasn’t until the 1880s that a great rugby player from Yale, Walter Camp, pioneered rules changes that slowly transformed rugby into the new game of American Football.

As a result, in 1912 representatives from 62 colleges met in New York City to form the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (now known as the NCAA).
