Can Females Play In The Nfl?
Contents
The National Football League has been a male-dominated league since its inception. But could that change in the future? Could females one day play in the NFL?
History
In 1920, the National Football League (NFL) was founded. At the time, it was mostly made up of college all-star teams and was not yet a professional league. In this early era of the NFL, there were no rules prohibiting female players from participating. As a result, there were a number of women who played in the NFL during its early years.
The first woman to play in the NFL
The first woman to play in the NFL was Sarah Fuller, a goalkeeper for the Vanderbilt Commodores. She made her debut in a game against the Missouri Tigers on November 28, 2020.
Why they haven’t been able to before
The NFL has been a male-dominated league since its inception. However, there have been a few women who have broken through the ranks and made a name for themselves. One of the most notable women in the NFL is Sarah Thomas, who became the first female official in 2015. In recent years, more and more women have been given opportunities to coach and play in the NFL. However, there are still no female players in the league. There are a few reasons why this is the case.
The physicality of the sport
The answer appears to be that the majority of people do not believe that women are capable of playing football at a professional level because they lack the size, strength, and speed required to compete with men.
In recent years, there have been a number of women who have attempted to challenge this perception by trying out for NFL teams, but none have been successful. The most notable example is Sarah Thomas, who became the first woman to officiate an NFL game in 2015.
However, it is important to note that officiating is a far different job from playing football, and there is no reason to believe that Thomas’ success as an official means that women would be able to compete as players.
The physicality of the sport is one of the biggest obstacles facing female football players. Women are simply not built like men, and they do not have the same amount of muscle mass or bone density. This makes it very difficult for them to engage in the same kind of contact that is necessary for football.
In addition, even if a woman were able to develop the necessary strength and size to play football, she would still be at a disadvantage because she would lack the speed and agility of her male counterparts. For these reasons, it is doubtful that any woman will ever be able to play in the NFL.
The lack of interest
The main reason why women haven’t played in the NFL is because of the lack of interest. In a study published in 2011, only 1.6% of respondents said they would like to see a woman play in the NFL. In addition, most people believe that women are not physically capable of playing in the NFL.
Another reason why women haven’t played in the NFL is because there is no precedence for it. Women have only been playing football professionally for a few years, and it will likely take some time for them to be considered for the NFL. In addition, the NFL has been slow to change and has only recently started to allow players with non-traditional backgrounds (such as players with criminal records) to enter the league.
Finally, there are also practical considerations that have prevented women from playing in the NFL. For example, there are no female-only football leagues or teams that could provide training and experience for potential female NFL players. In addition, most NFL stadiums are not equipped with locker rooms or bathrooms that accommodate both genders, which could pose problems for female players.
The future
In the future, the NFL may see more females playing in the league. This is due to the recent success of female athletes in other professional sports leagues, such as the WNBA and the NWSL. In addition, the NFL has been working to increase its reach to female fans. If more women start playing in the NFL, it could mean big changes for the league.
The possibility of a woman playing in the NFL
Though it has never happened before, the possibility of a woman playing in the NFL is not zero.
In October of 2019, it was reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were considering signing former college kicker Lauren Silberman to a contract. Silberman had previously tried out for a regional scouting combine. However, she injured herself during her kicking session and was unable to continue.
The NFL has not been traditionally receptive to the idea of female players. In 2015, Sarah Thomas became the first full-time female official, but even she faced significant pushback and skepticism from NFL fans and players.
If a woman were to eventually be signed by an NFL team, it would likely be as a placekicker or punter. These are positions that do not require as much physical contact as other positions, and which have historically been less competitive.
Even so, it would be a significant achievement for any woman to sign an NFL contract, regardless of position. And given that no woman has ever played in an NFL game before, it seems safe to say that the day when a woman plays in the NFL is still some way off.
The likelihood of a woman playing in the NFL
Though it seems unlikely a woman will play in the NFL in the near future, it is not impossible. In 2015, Jen Welter became the first woman to coach in the NFL when she was hired by the Arizona Cardinals as a linebackers coach during their preseason. In 2019, Katie Sowers became the second woman to ever coach in the NFL when she was hired as an offensive assistant with the San Francisco ers. These hires show that at least some progress is being made when it comes to female inclusion in the NFL coaching ranks.
As for playing, there has been at least one woman who has been on an NFL roster. In 1970, Lauren Lacy became the first and only woman to ever be drafted by an NFL team when she was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 13th round. Lacy never ended up suiting up for a game, but her mere selection shows that it is not impossible for a woman to end up on an NFL roster.
One thing working against women playing in the NFL is that there are currently no semi-professional or minor league football leagues for women to develop their skills in. The closest thing would be women’s tackle football leagues, but none of these leagues have any ties to the NFL. Until there is some sort of development league for women, it seems unlikely that any woman will be able to crack an NFL roster.
