The New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The Saints were founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966.
The team’s history
The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints currently compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The team was founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966. The Saints began play in Tulane Stadium in 1967.
The name “Saints” is an allusion to November 1 being All Saints Day in the Catholic faith, as well as to the fact that the original franchise was awarded on that date. Jackson square and Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans’ French Quarter served as inspiration for the team’s logo and name. They joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1967 along with the Seattle Seahawks.
The franchise won its first NFL division title in 1971, appearing in Super Bowl IV that same year, a game which they lost to the Minnesota Vikings 14-10. In 1987, they finished 12-3 and won their first NFC Championship Game, but lost again to the Vikings on a last second field goal by rookie kicker Chris Jacke. The team recovered from this loss, and made three consecutive playoff appearances from 1990–92 under head coach Jim Mora Jr.. Mora coached the Saints from 1986–96, compiling a 93-74 (.557) regular season record and leading them to five winning seasons and six playoff appearances. Under Mora, stars such as quarterback Bobby Hebert and running backs Dalton Hilliard and Rueben Mayes emerged; Hebert led them to three consecutive NFC West division titles from 1991–93 while Hilliard ran for over 1,000 yards twice (1991 & 1992) and Mayes had four straight 1,000 yard seasons (1989–92). After taking a year off from coaching in 1997, Mora returned for two more seasons before being fired following an abysmal 8-8 season in 1998 which saw Hebert benched for untested rookie Jake Delhomme midway through the season; this move ultimately set into motion a lengthy decline for both Hebert and the Saints which culminated with Hebert’s release following Delhomme’s breakout 2000 campaign which saw him go 10-4 as starter en route to being named NFC Rookie of the Year while leading New Orleans to their first ever playoff win since joining the NFL 33 years prior.

The team’s primary colors are old gold and black; their logo is a simplified version of the Fleur-de-lis. They played their home games in Tulane Stadium through the 1974 NFL season. The following year, they moved to the new Louisiana Superdome (now Mercedes-Benz Superdome).
For most of their first 20 years, the Saints were barely competitive, only getting to .500 twice. In 1987, they finished 12–3—their first-ever winning season—and qualified for the NFL playoffs for the first time in franchise history. In 2010, they won Super Bowl XLIV 31–17 over the Indianapolis Colts.
The Saints’ Diehard Fans
Who they are
The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. They are members of the National Football League (NFL) as a part of the league’s NFC South division. The U.S. state of Louisiana is nicknamed “The Bayou State,” and no team represents that nickname better than the New Orleans Saints.
The Saints were founded on November 1, 1966. The NFL awarded the city of New Orleans an expansion franchise on that date, which was the tenth anniversary of the founding of the city’s original NFL franchise, the Dallas Texans. The team was given its name by general manager Tommy LaPorte, who was inspired by a Catholic college football team he saw while attending a game at Tulane Stadium called “Le GrandOrange,” or “The Big Easy.”
The diehard fans of the New Orleans Saints are known as “Who Dats.” The name is derived from a popular cheer that fans would shout during games: “Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?”
What they do
The Who Dat? Nation is a group of sports fans who support the New Orleans Saints. They are known for their creative chants and signs, as well as their elaborate tailgating rituals.
The Who Dat? Nation was born out of the team’s struggle to find an identity in the early years of its existence. In the 1970s, the Saints were an expansion team that struggled to find its footing. The fans were passionate but didn’t have much to cheer for.
This all changed in1987 when the team finally had a winning season. The fans responded by creating theWho Dat? chant, which quickly caught on and became synonymous with the team.
Today, the Who Dat? Nation is one of the most recognizable and passionate fan bases in all of sports. They are known for their party-like atmosphere and their love of all things Saints.
