A quick look at the history of the NFL and how it got its start.
A Brief History of the NFL
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league. It was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL consists of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC).
The Early Years
The National Football League (NFL) was born out of the rivalry between two professional American football leagues, the National Football League and the American Football League. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association (APFA) was formed. The APFA changed its name to the National Football League in 1922. The NFL began with 14 teams and eventually had 24 teams by 1950.
The Modern Era
In the modern era, the National Football League (NFL) is the most popular professional American football league, contested by thirty-two teams divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFC is made up of sixteen teams located in all four time zones in the United States (including eight in Central Time), while the AFC is composed of fourteen teams located primarily in Eastern Time.
From its humble beginnings on November 17, 1920, when just eleven teams took the field for the first NFL game, to today when scores of future Hall of Famers play before packed stadiums and a national television audience, the NFL has come a long way. The league has undergone several evolutions since its inception over ninety years ago.
How the NFL Began
The National Football League, or NFL, started in 1920 with eleven teams. George Halas, the owner of the Chicago Bears, was the driving force behind the formation of the NFL. He wanted a league that was separate from the college football scene. The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920 between the Bears and the Cardinals.
The First NFL Game
On November 22, 1920, the first NFL game was played. The teams were the Chicago Tigers and the Rock Island Independents. The game was played at Douglas Park in Chicago. The final score was 19-14, in favor of the Tigers.
The Founding of the NFL
The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920, when eleven teams from across the country came together to form the league. The NFL has come a long way since then, growing into one of the most popular sports leagues in the world. Today, the NFL is made up of 32 teams, divided evenly between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). Each year, the best teams from each conference compete in the NFC-AFC Championship Game, also known as the Super Bowl.

The NFL’s Popularity
The National Football League has been America’s most popular sports league for decades, and it continues to grow in popularity. Today, the NFL is the highest-grossing professional sports league in the world, with revenues of more than $13 billion in 2020. The NFL’s popularity is due to many factors, including the league’s aggressive marketing, the popularity of fantasy football, and the fact that the sport is simple to understand and easy to follow.
The NFL’s Influence
While the National Football League did not technically start today, its influence can be seen throughout America on this day. The NFL has been around for almost 100 years and has become one of the most popular sports in the country. It is so popular that it is estimated that over 100 million people in the United States, about one third of the population, will watch at least part of an NFL game today. That is an incredible amount of people and shows just how much influence the NFL has on American culture.
