Dish Network (stylized as dish) is an American direct-broadcast satellite service provider. The company provides satellite television, audio programming, and interactive television services to commercial and residential customers in the United States. As of November 2016, the company provided services to 13.7 million television and 580,000 broadband subscribers. The company has approximately 16,000 employees. The company is headquartered in Meridian, Colorado, though the postal designation of nearby Englewood, Colorado is used in the corporate mailing address. Dish Network is a subsidiary of Dish Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH), a publicly traded company which also owns and operates the Blockbuster LLC video rental service.

When Dish Network was founded in March 1996, its pay-per-view channel TVN had just one movie at a time to offer to viewers. TVN became Dish Network’s first successful pay-per-view network.[citation needed] One year later TVN launched “Flipper”, a two-way interactive satellite TV pet feeder that allowed subscribers to order Pay-Per-View programming from their pets.[citation needed] In May 1998, Blockbuster LLC made an agreement with both DirecTV and Echostar (now Dish Network) for exclusive content delivery rights on their soon to be merged networks (DirecTV and EchoStar were approved by U.S. regulators to merge on July 16, 2008). This agreement allowed Blockbuster to offer channels such as HBO and Showtime for home cinema presentation via pay per view – bringing Blockbuster into competition with established PPV providers such as Viewers Choice in North America.[citation needed]

In February 1999, David Moskowitz resigned his position as president of EchoStar after he was appointed CEO ofoneweb.[5] At that time Mark Jackson continued running EchoStar while serving as Vice President of Spacecom – which controlled Echostar’s ground stations aboard geosynchronous communications satellites; Jackson would later succeedMoskowitz as EchoStar’s President on June 8, 1999.[6][7][8] In March 1999 Charlie Ergen reassigned Bruce Bowler from president of Spacecom – whichEchostar acquired during its merger with Hughes Electronics on January 28 – back to president dishnetwork effective April 15; Bowler similarly served as president of both operations until he departed from the companies entirely on August 15.[9] Joseph Clayton became president and chief executive officer (CEO) of dishnetwork effective August 15; Moskowitz remained chairman until November when he departed all three companies altogether.[10][11][12]
