Died at 79
Stan Kroenke, the combative and controversial owner of the Los Angeles Rams and other major professional sports teams, has died. He was 79.
Kroenke’s death was confirmed by Kurt Warner, the former Rams quarterback, late on Tuesday night. Kroenke’s cause of death was not immediately known.
Kroenke was one of the most powerful and influential figures in American sports, with a portfolio that included the Rams, the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche and major soccer teams in England and Europe. He also owned Arsenal, one of the most storied clubs in English soccer.
In recent years, Kroenke had become a lightning rod for criticism from fans of the teams he owned, as he was seen as a remote and aloof figure who was more interested in making money than winning championships.
In 2018, he provoked an uproar among Rams fans by moving the team from St. Louis to Los Angeles, a decision that many saw as driven purely by greed and ego.
But there was no denying Kroenke’s business acumen or his impact on the world of sports. He was a visionary thinker who saw the potential of sports franchises as valuable investments long before many others did.
He will be remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of American sports.
