Drew Brees was born on January 15, 1979, in Austin, Texas, to Dorothy and Eugene Wilson Brees II. He was named after his father’s favorite quarterback, Drew Pearson. Brees’s parents divorced when he was five, and his father remarried. His grandfather, Ray Akins, coached him in youth football.

His maternal grandmother Linda (née Howell) was born in Caracas, Venezuela; she met his grandfather while he was stationed at Navy bases where she worked as a hostess for officers.
