Which NFL Team Has the Lowest Franchise Win Percentage?
Contents
The answer may surprise you – it’s the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have only won about a third of their games since they joined the NFL in 1950.
The Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have the lowest franchise win percentage of any NFL team. They’ve only won five games in the past two seasons and haven’t made the playoffs since 2002. Owner Jimmy Haslam has been unable to turn the team around and they seem to be getting worse each year.
The team’s history
The Browns began play in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in 1946. The Browns won each of the AAFC’s four championship games before the league disbanded in 1949. They then joined the National Football League (NFL) along with the San Francisco 49ers and the original Baltimore Colts. The Browns won a championship in their inaugural NFL season, as well as in both 1950 and 1954. From 1965 to 1995, they made the playoffs 14 times, but did not win another championship or appear in the Super Bowl during that period. In 1995, owner Art Modell announced plans to move the team to Baltimore. After threats of legal action from the city of Cleveland and fans, Modell announced on November 6, 1995 that he had reached an agreement with then-Maryland Governor Parris Glendening and would relocate the franchise. The Browns’ intellectual property, including team name, logos, training facility, and history, were kept in trust and sold to businessman Jimmy Haslam in October 2012. He vowed to bring winning football back to Cleveland but suffered several losing seasons thereafter before firing head coach Mike Pettine after going 3–13 during his second year at helm of 2016 season; Hue Jackson took over for 2017 season as head of operations/head coach.

The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. They are members of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Browns play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium, which opened in 1999, with administrative offices and training facilities in Berea, Ohio. The Browns’ official colors are brown, orange, and white. They are unique among the 32 member franchises of the NFL in that they do not have a logo on their helmets.
The franchise was founded in 1945 by businessman Arthur B. Mickey McBride and coach Paul Brown as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns dominated the AAFC, compiling a 47–4–3 record in the league’s four seasons and winning its championship in each of them. When the AAFC folded after the 1949 season, the Browns joined the National Football League (NFL) along with three other AAFC teams-the San Francisco 49ers, the original Baltimore Colts franchise and the Buffalo Bills.
In 1950, Cleveland was awarded a franchise in the newly formed American Football League (AFL). They lost to initial NFL champions Philadelphia Eagles in 1951 Championship Game. Afterward, they won AFL titles in 1964 and 1965 under head coach Blanton Collier. The Browns competed in and lost eight more AFC Championship Games between 1970 and 1995. In 1995, owner Art Modell controversially announced plans to move the team to Baltimore; this prompted outrage among Browns fans as well as then-Governor George Voinovich’s legally unsuccessful attempt to block Modell’s move by declaring that he would refuse to approve any lease for a stadium unless Modell promised not to move the team for at least ten years. Modell ultimately reached an agreement with Voinovich that allowed him to move but required him to leave all team personnel-including then head coach Bill Belichick-in Cleveland for at least one year as well as set up a new training facility within city limits and give $3 million towards youth football programs; these terms were satisfied after one year when Belichick returned to take over head coaching duties and set up shop at Berea’s Berea International Airport complex (now known as Mashambe Building 18).
Since joining the NFL in 1950, through 2017 they have had only two winning seasons: 1987 with an 8–7–1 record under head coach Marty Schottenheimer due to character issues that led him to be replaced by Bud Carson who went 3–13 and again in 2002 when they finished 9–7 under head coach Butch Davis missing out on playoffs due has several key players going down with season ending injuries including starting quarterback Tim Couch . In total they have had 17 head coaches but only three have had winning records: Paul Brown (AAFC & NFL;58%), Marty Schottenheimer(8-7-1 or .531%),Butch Davis(9-7 or .563 %) The current head coach is Hue Jackson , who has gone 1–31 (.031%) over two seasons from 2016–17 becoming only second ever head coach with a worse win percentage than Modell’s first choice Bill Belichick(5-11 or .313%).
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Despite having some of the best players in the NFL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the lowest franchise win percentage of any team in the NFL. They have only had two winning seasons in the past ten years.
The team’s history
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers began play in 1976 as an expansion team of the National Football League (NFL). They played their first season in the American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The following year, they switched conferences and became members of the NFC Central. While they never won a division title while in the AFC, they did win their first division title in 1979 as members of the NFC Central. In 1982, they made it to the NFC Championship game, but lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion, the Washington Redskins. They did not make it back to the playoffs again until 1997.

The Buccaneers joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team, along with the Seattle Seahawks. Tampa Bay was awarded the franchise on April 5, 1974, beating out competing bids from Baltimore and Miami. They are the first team since 1960 to win a division title within their first 10 seasons, as well as the first to achieve a winning record and playoff berth within that timeframe. In 2002, they became just the second team in NFL history to win a Super Bowl championship in their first season after winning a conference championship, joining the Pittsburgh Steelers who accomplished it in Super Bowl XIV.
The Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions have the lowest franchise win percentage of any NFL team. The Lions have only won one playoff game since 1957 and have never been to a Super Bowl. The team has had some success in recent years, but they have never been able to put it all together and win when it matters most.
The team’s history
The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit. Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team began play in 1929 as an independent professional team. For the 1930 season, the Spartans formally joined the NFL as the other area independents folds, creating a new NFL franchise. Despite success within the NFL, they could not survive the Great Depression and relocated to Detroit for the 1934 season. The Lions have won four NFL Championships (1935, 1952, 1953, 1957).
The team’s win percentage
Since the NFL’s inception in 1920, there have been a number of teams that have come and gone. While some teams have enjoyed great success, others have struggled to find their footing. When looking at all of the NFL’s franchises, one team stands out as having the lowest franchise win percentage of any team in the league. That team is the Detroit Lions.
The Lions joined the NFL in 1930 as an expansion team. In their 86 years of existence, they have only managed to compile a winning record in 19 seasons (22%). They have also never won a Super Bowl, and their lone NFL Championship came in 1957.
In recent years, the Lions have shown some signs of improvement. They made the playoffs in 2011 for the first time since 1999, and they followed that up with another playoff appearance in 2014. However, they have yet to make it past the Wild Card round.
With a new season on the horizon, Lions fans will be hoping that their team can turn things around and start climbing up the franchise win percentage ranks.
