The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Browns play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium, which opened in 1999, with administrative offices and training facilities in Berea, Ohio. The Browns’ official colors are brown, orange, and white. They are unique among the 32 member franchises of the NFL in that they do not have a mascot.
The franchise was founded in 1945 by businessman Arthur B. McBride and coach Paul Brown as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns dominated the AAFC, compiling a 47–4–3 record within the league’s four-year existence and winning its championship in each of its four years. When the AAFC folded after the 1949 season, the Browns joined the NFL along with three other AAFC teams: the San Francisco 49ers, the original Baltimore Colts, and the original Buffalo Bills. In 1950, Brown hired general manager Bill Walsh from Notre Dame; this proved to be a wise move for several reasons: Walsh brought experience from his time with other NFL teams to his new organization; college coaching above all gave him an understanding not only of players but also of scouting and building successful programs; he had been strongly influenced by Brown while patterns of play at both levels had begun to merge during his time as an assistant under Frank Leahy at Notre Dame.
In 1951, under guidance from Walsh and head coach Paul Brown – who had departed for military service – GM Jim Ninowski led them to an 8–3–1 record and second-place finish behind the New York Giants. The team then went on to capture their first NFL Championship since joining the league by defeating the Los Angeles Rams 38–14 in Cleveland Municipal Stadium on December 24th. This was followed by an appearance in 1952’s NFL Championship game, where they lost to the Detroit Lions 17-7 at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, Michigan. After another second-place finish behind New York in 1953 (a season which saw them become one of only two teams ever to score more than 500 points in a single season), they returned to championship form by defeating §0the54 Detroit Lions 31-10 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium on December 26th for their second title in three years. The team then failed to make it back to another NFL Championship game for another decade as they made it back-to-back losing seasons in 1955 & 1956 ( compiling identical 3–9 records ), before posting consecutive winning seasons again from 1957–1959 ( compiling records of 7–5 in ’57 , 9–3 & 8–4 respectively ); this was followed by three more consecutive losing seasons from 1960-1962 , bottoming out with a 1-12-1 mark during their final year under original head coach Paul Brown before he was fired following their last game of that season .
