With the NFL regular season coming to an end, we take a look at who’s out of the playoffs and who’s still in the running.

Introduction

There are a few teams that have already been mathematically eliminated from the NFL Playoffs, but there are also a number of teams that still have a chance to make it to the postseason. Here is a look at who is out of the playoffs and who still has a chance to make a run at the Lombardi Trophy.

The following teams have been mathematically eliminated from the NFL Playoffs:

AFC teams that are out of the playoffs

There are a few AFC teams that are out of the playoffs. The Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, and Tennessee Titans are all out of the playoffs. The Ravens and Texans were both wild card teams, while the Colts and Titans were divisional teams.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are an American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ravens compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The team plays its home games at M&T Bank Stadium and is headquartered in Owings Mills.

The Ravens were established in 1996, when Art Modell, who was then the owner of the Cleveland Browns, announced plans to relocate the franchise to Baltimore. As part of a settlement between Modell, the city of Cleveland, and the other NFL franchises, Modell was required to leave the Browns’ history and records in Cleveland for a replacement team and replacement personnel that would take control in 1999. In return, he was allowed to take his own personnel and team to Baltimore, where such personnel would then form an expansion team. The Ravens have been mostly mediocre during their time in Baltimore; however they did win Super Bowl XLVII in 2012.

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins are a professional American football franchise based in the Miami metropolitan area. The Dolphins compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The Dolphins play their home games at Hard Rock Stadium in the northern suburb of Miami Gardens, Florida, and are headquartered in Davie, Florida.

The Dolphins were founded by attorney-politician Joe Robbie and actor-comedian Danny Thomas. They began play in the AFL in 1966. The region had not previously had a professional football team; the AFL’s expansion was partly motivated by bringing a team to the area which had been home to baseball’s Miami Marlins (now the Miami Marlins) and the NFL’s Miami Seahawks (previously located in Baltimore, Maryland). The AFL teams played their first two seasons at the Orange Bowl. With quarterback Bob Griese and running back Larry Csonka, they became only the second AFL team to win back-to-back championships, winning live consecutive games in Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl VIII. They were crowned champions of that Super Bowl on January 14, 1974 with a 24–7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings at Rice Stadium In 2002, former defensive end Jason Taylor surpassed Zach Thomas as the Dolphins’ career sack leader.[11] In 2008, linebacker Joey Porter tied Taylor for second place on that list Until 2012 they were owned by real estate mogul Stephen M. Ross.[13][14] Ross made headlines stating his intentions to make changes to have a more consistent year-to-year performance from his players as well as build on free agency signings he made during that off–season.[15] On January 4, Ross announced changes to his front office starting with himself giving up full control over day–to–day decisions and ceding it to general manager Jeff Ireland who now reports directly to him.[16][17][18]

The Dolphins entered 2009 season without longtime offensive coordinator Dan Henning who retired after serving in that role for all but one season since1990 joining Don Shula’s staff in that capacity.[19] Henning was replaced by former Arizona Cardinals head coach Todd Bowles who became interim head coach when Tony Sparano was fired on December 12, 2011 after going 4–9.[20][21] Sparano was hired on January 20, 2008. After starting out 11–5 in 2008 and winning their first division title since 2000 along with a playoff game for only the second time since 2001,[22] they failed to make the playoffs in 2009 going 7–9,[23] which many attribute[who?] to an unusually difficult schedule which included opponents coming off of bye weeks 6 times throughout he course of he season as well being saddled with 4 away games following Thursday Night Football appearances (a scheduling quirk NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said will not happen again). Some also believe[who?] quarterback Chad Pennington’s season ending shoulder injury suffered during Week 3 against Buffalo factored heavily into their struggles that season as backup Chad Henne was pressed into duty and threw 18 interceptions compared to just 12 touchdown passes while posting an abysmal 66.4 passer rating.[24]

New York Jets

Eliminated from playoff contention with a record of 7-9, the New York Jets failed to build on their promising 2018 season. After starting the year 1-7, the Jets put together a six-game winning streak to finish the season. However, it wasn’t enough to make the playoffs.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football franchise based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bengals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Their home stadium is Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati. They are currently coached by Zac Taylor.

The Bengals were founded in 1966 as a member of the American Football League (AFL) by former Cleveland Browns head coach Paul Brown. Brown was the Bengals’ head coach from their inception to 1975. After being ousted as the Browns’ head coach by Art Modell,Brown had shown interest in establishing another NFL franchise in Ohio and looked at both Toledo and Cincinnati as potential cities. His eventual choice was Cincinnati, due largely to the city’s position along multiple interstate highways, which made air and road travel easier for his players.

The Bengals have reached the playoffs seven times under Marvin Lewis, but have failed to win a playoff game since 1990. The Bengalshave been owned by the Brown family since their establishment; Mike Brown has been the team’s de facto general manager since 1991, and holds primary responsibility for personnel decisions within Bengals’ organization.

NFC teams that are out of the playoffs

There are a few NFC teams that are out of the playoffs this year. The Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Dallas Cowboys are all out of the playoffs. These teams all had high expectations coming into the season, but they were not able to meet them.

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are out of the playoffs. They have a record of 5-10-1 and are third in the NFC West.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are an American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. The team plays its home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit.

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are out of the playoffs.

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers are out of the playoffs. The Panthers were eliminated from the playoffs after their loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Conclusion

The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Six teams from each of the league’s two conferences qualify for the playoffs. seeded according to regular season record. The tournament culminates in the Super Bowl, the league’s championship game.
