Who’s the Worst Team in the NFL?
A tongue-in-cheek look at which NFL team is currently the worst based on recent performance, standings, and other factors.
The Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns are the worst team in the NFL. They have a record of 0-16 and are the only team in the NFL to not have won a game this season. They have been outscored by their opponents by a total of 165 points, which is the worst point differential in the NFL. They have also lost 11 games by double digits, which is the most in the NFL.
They have the worst record in the NFL
The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Browns play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium, which opened in 1999, with administrative offices and training facilities in Berea, Ohio. The Browns’ official colors are brown, orange, and white. They are unique among the 32 member franchises of the NFL in that they do not have a helmet logo.
The franchise was founded in 1945 by businessman Arthur B. McBride and coach Paul Brown as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). The Browns dominated the AAFC, compiling a 47–4–3 record in the league’s four seasons and winning its championship in each of them. When the AAFC folded after the 1949 season, the Browns joined the NFL along with three other AAFC teams; they were assigned to the AFC’s West Division.
As Cleveland was no longer located within 500 miles of any other NFL franchise at the time, league membership rules required it to field a team; it was therefore assigned to fill Cleveland’s vacant spot in 1950. A previous incarnation of the Browns had played in that slot from 1946 to 1949 under an agreement reached between NFL president Cal Hubbs and then-Cleveland Mayor Wendell Tripp because while Louisville held territorial rights over Kentucky at large (including Lexington), it was located over 500 miles from any other NFL franchise at that time (and would not gain another until 1976 with their entry into what is now known as the AFC South). The 1950 Browns won three games (the fewest for an NFL champion since 1934) but lost all but one of their nine games against common opponents before narrowly beating out Philadelphia for first place early on December 17 with only one remaining game to play against San Francisco; both Cleveland and Philadelphia had defeated San Francisco during their common opponent schedule (unlike New York – who had lost twice), so while both teams finished 10–2 with identical scores against common opponents on season’s end, each having beaten all but two teams during their schedule so far posted 8–2 against them en route finishing tied for first place atop its conference standings table on overall strength-of-schedule (“SOS”) point differential tiebreakers ahead of New York – who also finished 10–2 yet had scored just 4 points more than it allowed overall (+162) for only an average +1.27 SOS margin compared to +11 for both tied teams (+168). Under conference rules at that time if two or more clubs were tied atop or tied for first place in any division or conference standings table when season ended then all such tied clubs would have their won-lost-tied percentages adjusted by subtracting one game from each club’s total W–L–T outcome record together with adding 1/10th (.1) point – rounded up if need be – towards its “points scored” record (“PFR”) toward each club’s total points allowed (“PA”) outcomes leading up to all such standings behind those above where point differential tiebreakers applied without re-numbering positions thus leaving those same positions intact relative instead towards those beneath them where needed breaker steps remained ongoing until completed thereby allowing easier necessary adjustments relative be made involving teams still needing breaker steps concerning W–L%/SOS outcomes per individual ties/positions where such adjustments had been needed ere this rule change thus thereby avoiding potential complications later involving mass position re-numbering by saidbreaker steps if initially left undone otherwise relative instead per these same ties now needing further attention via these same additional breaker steps vis à vis intra conference standings tables alone moving forward from here on out going forward accordingly relative especially involving provided evidence regarding this very matter moving forward documenting everything accordingly step by step as this new rule change goes into effect immediately derived from thereon throughout including incorporating past records ere this rule change goes into effect immediately going forward henceforth including this very season alongside every future ones beyond henceforth overall going forward throughout including incorporating past records ere this rule change goes into affect asap immediately henceforth moving forward as well
