The Bulls were followed by another minor league team in Greensboro, the Red Sox, who began play in 1907 as part of the Virginia State League. The Red Sox moved to North Carolina’s Tri-State League in 1908 and then to Pennsylvania’s Tri-State League in 1909 before finally settling back in North Carolina as part of the Carolina Association from 1910-1912.

While there have been many attempts to bring major league baseball to the Carolinas over the years, none have been successful. In 1972, both Charlotte and Raleigh were granted franchises as part of Major League Baseball’s expansion campaign. However, neither city was able build a suitable ballpark at that time and their respective franchises were awarded to Seattle and Texas instead.

After all, we are home to two of the most passionate baseball states in the country in South Carolina and North Carolina. Major league teams require a large base of potential fans to draw from and the Carolinas just don’t have that. The second reason is geography.
