How Big Are Baseballs?
A look at the size of baseballs used in the MLB, college, high school, and little league.
The Size of a Baseball
A baseball is a ball used in the sport of the same name. It is 3 – 3.25 inches (7.6 – 8.3 cm) in diameter and weighs 5 – 5.25 ounces (142 – 149 grams). Baseballs are generally made by stitching together a leather or cloth cover with a cork center.
The circumference of a baseball
The circumference of a baseball is generally between 9 and 9.25 inches. However, professional baseballs used in Major League Baseball games have a slightly larger circumference of 9.32 inches. The size of a baseball can also vary depending on the age group playing, with youth baseballs typically being smaller than those used by adults.

The History of the Baseball
Baseballs have been around for a long time and they have undergone a lot of changes throughout the years. The size, weight, and material of the baseball have all been changed in order to make the game more enjoyable. Let’s take a look at the history of the baseball.
The first baseball
The first baseball was invented in 1839 by Abner Doubleday. The original baseball was a much different game than the baseball we know today. It was played with a rounded piece of wood and there were no bases, just four posts that the players had to hit the ball around. The game was called “town ball” and was very popular in the early 1800s.
The first professional baseball team was the Cincinnati Reds, who were founded in 1869. The first professional baseball league was the National League, which was founded in 1876. The first World Series was played in 1903 between the Boston Americans (now the Red Sox) and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Americans won five games to three.
The first professional baseball game
The first professional baseball game was played on May 4, 1869, between the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the Cleveland Forest Citys. The game was played at Union Grounds in Brooklyn, New York.
The Red Stockings, who were baseball’s first all-professional team, won the game by a score of 2-0. The team’s player-manager, George Wright, hit the game’s only home run.
The forest Citys were also a professional team, but they were not as skilled as the Red Stockings. The game was significant because it showed that professional baseball could be successful.
In the years following the first professional baseball game, several more teams were formed. These teams played in what was known as the National Association of Base Ball Players, which was founded in 1871.
The first baseball league
The first professional baseball league was the National Association of Base Ball Players, which lasted from 1871 to 1875. The league was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, with nine teams from five states. Pennsylvania had the most teams with three: the Philadelphia Athletics, the Keystone Club, and the Philadelphia Whites. New York had two teams: the Mutuals and the Eckfords. Boston had the Red Stockings. Cleveland had the Forest Citys. And Michigander George Bechtel brought a team of Detroit ballplayers west to Chicago, where they became known as the Chicago White Stockings.
The first professional baseball game took place on May 4, 1871, in Cincinnati, Ohio, between those same White Stockings and the Cincinnati Reds. The game was a sell-out, with more than 2,000 fans in attendance. Harry Wright, who managed and played center field for Cincinnati that day (and who would go on to found both the Reds and the Boston Red Sox), hit the game’s first home run.
How the Baseball is Made
The baseball is a sphere with a circumference of 9 to 9.25 inches (22.86 to 23.47 cm) and a weight of 5 to 5.25 ounces (142 to 149 grams). It is composed of yarn wound around a small core of cork, rubber, or similar material, and covered with two strips of white horsehide or cowhide leather, tightly stitched together.
The materials used to make a baseball
baseballs are made of a cork center wrapped in yarn and then covered with cowhide or horsehide. In the early days of baseball, balls were made by hand and could vary significantly in size and weight. Today, all Major League Baseballs are hand-crafted to very specific dimensions and weight specifications.
The stitching of a baseball
Baseballs have 108 double stitches. Hand-stitched baseballs have long been the preferred ball in professional play. They are no longer made entirely by hand, however, as machines now sew most of the cover onto the ball. The stitching is still done by hand, however, to ensure that the baseball’s cover is tight and free of any defects that might affect play.
The construction of a baseball
A baseball is a ball used in the sport of the same name. The construction of the baseball is specified by Rule 1.09 of Major League Baseball and by Rule 3.01 of the International Baseball Federation.
A baseball consists of a rubber or cork core, wrapped in yarn and covered with a leather or synthetic outer layer. The dimensions of a baseball are specified by MLB Rule 3.01, which states that a regulation baseball shall weigh not more than 5 ounces avoirdupois and not less than 5 ounces avoirdupois, and measure not more than 9 inches in circumference.
The yarn used to wrap the baseball can be either wool or cotton, and must be wound in such a way that there are no gaps between the layers of yarn. The area of the baseball that is under the stitches is known as the “pill.” The outer layer of the baseball is made from cowhide or horsehide, and must be between 10 and 12 ounces when dry.
The MLB specifications for a baseball are similar to those of the International Baseball Federation, although the size and weight requirements are slightly different. A regulation MLB baseball must weigh between 5¼ and 5¾ ounces avoirdupois, and must measure between 9¼ and 9⅞ inches in circumference.
