When Does Baseball Season Begin?
It’s nearly time for baseball season! Here’s everything you need to know about when the season begins.
Introduction
While some baseball fans may argue that baseball season never really ends, the majority of fans would say that the baseball season begins in late March/early April and ends in late September/early October. This is when the majority of teams begin their training for the regular season, which typically consists of 162 games.
The regular season
The regular season of Major League Baseball (MLB) is held from April to October. The exact date of the start of the regular season varies slightly from year to year, but it generally begins on the first Sunday in April and ends on the first Sunday in October. The regular season consists of 162 games for each of the 30 teams in MLB.
The postseason
In Major League Baseball, the postseason is conducted after the conclusion of the regular season. The playoffs began in 1969, when both the National League and the American League were each divided into two divisions (East and West, respectively), with each league’s regular season champion being assured of a playoff berth. The winner of each division series (the best-of-five format before moving to a best-of-seven in 1985) meets the winner of the other in each league’s respective Championship Series, with those winners advancing to play each other in the World Series.
Spring training
Spring training is a time for players to work on their skills and for teams to form their rosters for the upcoming season. It typically runs from February to April, with games beginning in late February or early March.
