Razorback baseball is one of the most successful programs in all of college baseball. The team has made 43 NCAA tournament appearances and has won 17 conference championships. The Razorbacks have also made 11 College World Series appearances, including seven in a row from 1979-1985.
The History of Razorback Baseball
The Razorbacks first took the field in 1897, but the team didn’t become a regular part of the University of Arkansas campus until 1900. Baseball became a varsity sport at Arkansas in the spring of1900 with A.J. Patterson serving as head coach. The program has been on an upward trajectory ever since, winning conference titles and making postseason appearances with regularity.
Under head coach Dave Van Horn, who took over prior to the 2003 season, the Razorbacks have reached new heights, including a pair of trips to the College World Series (2004 & 2009). In 2004, Arkansas finished as the national runner-up after falling to Cal State Fullerton in the championship series. The Hogs are one of only 10 programs to make multiple trips to Omaha since 2000 and joined an elite group of programs who have reached back-to-back College World Series when they returned in 2009.
