Give a brief history of the teams.
The Boston Red Sox are a professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they have played in 13. Their most recent appearance and win was in 2018. In addition, they won the 1904 American League pennant, but were not able to defend their 1903 World Series championship when the New York Giants refused to participate in the 1904 World Series. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the Red Sox’ home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. The “Red Sox” name was chosen by team owner John I. Taylor after the red socks worn by children playing baseball at investigational medical conferences he attended while a student at Harvard University.
The Boston Braves, then known as the Red Stockings and later the Beaneaters, won baseball’s first ever modern World Series in 1887. After winning again in 1893, they became only the second team to win three times, post-seasoning being added only in 1884; they remain one of only four teams with that distinction (joined by Oakland Athletics – nine times; San Francisco Giants – seven times; and Chicago Cubs – four times). They then went on to win a fourth championship in 1915, before selling Babe Ruth to their rivals, the New York Yankees after that season. In an extensive period of mediocrity following Ruth’s departure (often referred to as “The Curse of the Bambino” because it allegedly ended with Ruth’s transfer from Red Sox to Yankees), they did not win another title until 2004.[1][2]
Describe the game play by play.
Inning one started out with a home run by J.D. Martinez of the Boston Red Sox. The Tampa Bay Rays quickly answered back with a home run by Brandon Lowe in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the third inning when Kevin Kiermaier hit a solo home run to give the Rays the 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Boston’s Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run home run to take back the lead for the Red Sox, 3-2. However, Tampa Bay’s Austin Meadows hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie things up at 3-3.
Inning seven proved to be pivotal as Rays’ catcher Mike Zunino hit a three-run home run to give Tampa Bay a 6-3 lead. The Red Sox were not able to answer back and ultimately lost the game 6-3.
