Where Is Baseball Spring Training?

During baseball’s offseason, teams congregate in warm weather locations to prepare for the upcoming season. These locations are generally in Florida or Arizona, although teams have been known to hold spring training in other states and even other countries. Here is a list of where all 30 Major League Baseball teams will be holding their spring training camps in 2020:

Arizona
-The Oakland Athletics will be based in Mesa, Arizona.
-The Seattle Mariners will train in Peoria, Arizona.
-The San Francisco Giants will train in Scottsdale, Arizona.
-The Chicago Cubs will hold their spring training camp in Mesa, Arizona.
-The Colorado Rockies will be based in Scottsdale, Arizona.
-The Los Angeles Dodgers will train in Glendale, Arizona.
-The Milwaukee Brewers will hold their spring training camp in Phoenix, Arizona.
-The Texas Rangers will train in Surprise, Arizona.
-The Kansas City Royals will be based in Surprise, Arizona.
-The Cincinnati Reds will train in Goodyear, Arizona.
-The Cleveland Indians will hold their spring training camp in Goodyear, Arizona.
-The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will train in Tempe, Arizona.

The Cactus League

The Cactus League is a baseball league of 15 teams in the American Southwest. It operates in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The Cactus League began in California in 1909 with the Los Angeles Angels (now the Los Angeles Dodgers) and the Pasadena Athletic Club. In 1910, four more teams joined the league, and it became known as the Arizona-Texas League. The league disbanded in 1911 but was reorganized in 1929 as the Arizona-Southwest League. It became the Southwest International League in 1948 and was renamed the Arizona-Mexico League in 1952. The league expanded to eight teams in 1968 and 10 teams in 1969. It became known as the Southwestern League from 1974 to 1979 and reverted to its original name—the Arizona-Mexico League—in 1980. The name was again changed to Arizona Instructional League in 1981before reverting to Arizona-Mexico League for good in 1988.

The Cactus League grew steadily throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1992, it absorbed the Ft. Lauderdale Yankees and Ft. Myers Miracle of the Florida State League (FSL), which had been staging their spring training games at Boardwalk and Baseball Theme Park in Kissimmee (near Orlando). This brought league membership to 12 teams.

In 1994, following the breakup of two major leagues (the American Association [AA] and International League [IL]), four AA teams (the Albuquerque Dukes, Buffalo Bisons, Denver Zephyrs/New Orleans Zephyrs/Iowa Cubs, and Oklahoma City 89ers/Oklahoma RedHawks) joined the Cactus League bringing membership to 16 teams—the most ever for any spring baseball training league.

The CactusLeague schedule typically runs from late February/early March through early April; however because there isn’t an interleague play between distant geographical locations like there is during baseball’s regular season (e.g., San Francisco Giants vs Boston Red Sox), fans can choose to follow their favorite team(s) without worrying about travel logistics or expenses—everything is conveniently located within a reasonable driving distance!

The Grapefruit League

The Grapefruit League is a Major League Baseball (MLB) exhibition schedule that features fifteen teams from the American League (AL) and fifteen teams from the National League (NL). The Grapefruit League runs for thirty days during spring training, starting with the first week of February and ending in early April.

The Grapefruit League is named for Florida’s grapefruit-growing regions, and six of its teams are located in the state: the Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves, and Washington Nationals. The Grapefruit League also includes teams from other southeastern states, such as the Baltimore Orioles (Sarasota, Florida), Boston Red Sox (Fort Myers, Florida), New York Yankees (Tampa, Florida), Philadelphia Phillies (Clearwater, Florida), Pittsburgh Pirates (Bradenton, Florida), St. Louis Cardinals (Jupiter, Florida), and Toronto Blue Jays (Dunedin, Florida).
