The teams that played in the World Series this year
The 2016 World Series was the 112th edition of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) championship series. The best-of-seven playoff was played between the American League (AL) champion Cleveland Indians and the National League (NL) champion Chicago Cubs, with the Indians winning the series four games to three in game seven. It was the first time two teams from the same city faced each other in a World Series since the New York Yankees defeated their crosstown rivals, the Brooklyn Dodgers, in 1956. It was also only the third time a Game 7 occurred in a collapse by a team leading 3–1, following postseason play-by-play broadcaster Joe Buck’s call of Scott Boras client Carlos Beltrán being stranded on third base during Game 7 of the 2006 World Series and Chris Chambliss hitting a walk-off home run to win it for the Yankees: “And we’ll see you tomorrow night!”
How the teams did in the playoffs
The teams that made it to the playoffs were the Baltimore Orioles, the Detroit Tigers, the Kansas City Royals, and the New York Yankees in the American League and the Atlanta Braves, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals in
the National League. The Orioles and Royals made it to the ALCS, while the Braves and Dodgers battled it out in the NLCS. In a close seven-game series, the Orioles ultimately won the ALCS against the Royals, while the Dodgers came out on top against the Braves in six games. This set up a matchup between two wild card teams in the World Series which had not happened before in MLB history. In a thrilling seven-game series,
the Orioles finally claimed victory against the Dodgers to win their first World Series since 1983.
Who won the World Series
The Washington Nationals won the 2019 World Series, their first championship in franchise history. They defeated the Houston Astros, who were appearing in their second consecutive World Series and were looking to repeat as champions.
