History
The National Basketball Association All-Star Game is an annual exhibition basketball game played between the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference All-Stars, which are selected by fan, media, and player voting. The game is usually played on the Sunday preceding the February NBA trade deadline.
First held in 1951, the All-Star Game was originally created to identify and display the top players in each conference for potential inclusion on their respective All-Star teams. The inaugural game was played in Boston on January 15, 1951. Since then, the game has become one of the most highly anticipated events of any NBA season. From 1951 to 1955, the All-Star Game was contested solely between players from the Eastern and Western conferences. In 1956, a team of players representing each conference was assembled to play against an all-star team composed of players from the rest of the league. This format continued until 1971 when the league began allowing fans to vote for their favorite players to start in the game.
Today, fans continue to play a significant role in determining which players will start in the All-Star Game. Each year, fans vote online for their favorite players at each position to be named starters for the game. The two guards and three frontcourt player who receive the most votes are named starters for their respective conference teams. While fan voting serves as the primary method for determining starters, NBA coaches also play a role in selecting reserves for each squad. Coaches vote for two guards, three frontcourt players, and two wild card selections regardless of position. These selections are meant to add balance and representation from every team across both conferences.
Once rosters are finalized, it’s time for one of basketball’s most spectacular events —the Slam Dunk Contest! This highly anticipated event features some of the league’s greatest athletes competing in a high-flying show of aerial prowess and artistry. Six dunkers take part in two rounds of competition with only four advancing to Round 2. From there, it’s two dunks per person until a winner is crowned champion by a panel of judges.
TheThree-Point Contest has also become one of fans’ favorite events during All-Star Weekend. This event pits eight sharpshooters against each other with only five making it out of round one after shooting five triples from five different spots around the arc within 60 seconds. The top three finishers then advance to round two where they shoot another set of five triples within 30 seconds with final scores being tallied up to crown a champion shooter
