Giannis Antetokounmpo was born in Athens, Greece, on December 6, 1994. His parents, Charles and Veronica, were Nigerian immigrants who had seven children altogether: four boys and three girls. Growing up in the economically struggling area of Sepolia, the Antetokounmpo brothers—Giannis, Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex—were allraised with a strong work ethic instilled in them by their parents. Giannis began playing organized basketball when he was just six years old. When he 10, he started playing for the youth academy of Filathlitikos B.C., one of Greece’s top-tier professional teams. At age 16, Giannis made his debut with Filathlitikos’s senior team in the Greek 2nd Division; he was one of the youngest professional basketball players in Greece at that time. Giannisimportantly fell under the tutelage of then-coach Fotis Katsikaris during his time with Filathlitikos; Katsikaris would later become an assistant coach for the Greek national team—a role he still holds today—and forged a close relationship with Giannis as a result. In 2012, Giannis decided to declare for the NBA Draft instead ofplay college basketball in the United States; at 18 years old, he became the first-everDraft pick born and raised outside of North America when he was selected 15th overall bythe Milwaukee Bucks.

Professional career

After going undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft, Giannis signed a four-year deal with the Milwaukee Bucks on July 22, 2013. In December 2014, he was selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star Weekend as a rookie. He finished his rookie season averaging 6.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

The following season, Giannis improved to 12.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He was again selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star Weekend. Antetokounmpo was subsequently acquired by the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League, averaging 18.0 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in 25 games for them.

On February 20, 2014, he was traded to the New York Knicks in exchange for cash considerations, but was later waived by the Knicks on February 22 after only appearing in one game for them. Three days later, he was acquired by the Reno Bighorns of the D-League.

On July 24, 2014, Antetokounmpo was traded to the Dallas Mavericks along with Shane Larkin and José Calderón in exchange for Samuel Dalembert, Wayne Ellington and Shane Larkin. However, he was later waived by the Mavericks on October 25 after appearing in one preseason game for them.

On April 28, 2013, Antetokounmpo was selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. He became the first Greek player drafted in the first round, and was also the highest draft pick ever for a Greek player, surpassing Nick Galis (17th overall in 1983). On July 30, he signed his rookie scale contract with the Bucks.
In his rookie season, he averaged 6.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in 77 games. He finished second in voting for the NBA All-Rookie Second Team behind Trey Burke of the Utah Jazz.
The following season he saw a significant increase in playing time under new head coach Jason Kidd, and by December had already established himself as a starter for Milwaukee.
