and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The team’s name is derived from a deer species found in Wisconsin; Bucks are sometimes referred to colloquially as “the Deer”, “deers”, or simply “Bucks”. In time for the 1974–75 season to coincide with their move from the MECCA Arena to Milwaukee Arena (later UW–Milwaukee Panther Arena), then-owner Allen Susman reached out to local sports writer Bob Wolf to come up with a new name for his basketball club. At first Wolf rejected Susman’s request for him to come up with another name for his new franchise but eventually complied after continual persistence from Susman. Ultimately he chose “Bucks” because he thought deer were noble creatures and that deer hunting should be respected like big game hunting; both required skill and were pursued mainly for sport rather than necessity.[12][13]
