The teams
There are 30 teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Of those 30 teams, 29 are based in the United States and one, the Toronto Raptors, are based in Canada. In this section, we will take a look at the teams that are playing today.
The Warriors
The Warriors compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Warriors play their home games at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The team was established in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the team won two NBA championships. In 1962, the franchise relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area and was renamed the San Francisco Warriors until 1971, when its name was changed to Golden State Warriors. Since moving to Oakland, California in 1971, the team has appeared in eight NBA Finals, winning six NBA championships
(1975, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020), and setting what were then NBA records for wins in a season (73) and regular season plus playoff combined wins (88) in 2015–16. Moving again to San Francisco in 2019, prior to that season’s NBA Finals victory, led them to break those records again shortly thereafter. With Stephen Curry leading an All-Star cast including Klay Thompson and Draymond Green among others that have helped form one of the best teams ever assembled in NBA history during this dynasty era from 2014 onward under head coach Steve Kerr, they have set numerous franchise and league records.
The Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers, also known as the Cavs, are an American professional basketball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cavs compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Central Division. The team began play as an expansion team in 1970, along with the Portland Trail Blazers and Buffalo Braves. Home games were first held at Cleveland Arena from 1970 to 1974, followed by the Richfield Coliseum from 1974 to 1994. Since 1994, the Cavs have played their home games at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland.
The Cavaliers name was chosen by owner Len Kosmalski in 1970. It was prominent homebrewer Jerry Tomaiolo who suggested the name to him while they were discussing tomahawk dunks during warmups for an ABA game. The primary logo of the Cavaliers from 1971 to 1983 was a silver “sword” with a red cavalier silhouette riding it, set on a round navy blue background. In 1983, then-owner Ted Stepien sold the team to a group of five investors led by George and Gordon Gund: brothers who had made their fortunes in land development and savings and loan associations. During this time, rookie superstar Larry Nance joined All-Star point guardWorld B. Free as well as Bill Laimbeer, Mark West,, Hot Rod Williams and other talented young players on what some considered one of the most talented rosters ever assembled for an NBA expansion club.
The Spurs
The Spurs are an American professional basketball team based in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays its home games at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.
The Spurs announced that they would be one of two expansion teams to join the NBA for the 1976–77 season, along with the Denver Nuggets. They finished with a record of 22 wins and 60 losses, and were consequently eliminated from playoff contention in their inaugural season. In 1983–84, despite a rocky start that saw them lose their first 11 games under new head coach Bob Bass, they posted a then-NBA record 35-game winning streak en route to posting a 49–33 record. Gregg Popovich became the team’s head coach in 1996.
