His godfather is former NBA player Gary Matthews Sr.. At the age of three, Davis began playing basketball on an 8ft hoop his father had installed in their backyard. When Davis was in fifth grade, he began playing organized basketball at Perspectives Charter School. During this time, he grew four inches and his father put him on a strict diet which limited Davis to eating chicken breast, fish, vegetables and fruit. In eighth grade, he joined his local Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team where he played against future NBA players such as Austin Daye and Derrick Rose.

His Family

Anthony Davis was born on March 11, 1993, in Chicago, Illinois. He has two sisters, Antoinette and Lesha. His mother, Erainer, worked for the Chicago Public Schools as a teacher’s aide, and his father, Anthony Sr., was a process server. Growing up in the rough inner city of Chicago, Davis’ parents did their best to keep their kids away from crime and violence. They were very supportive of their children’s athletics – both Antoinette and Lesha played basketball – and would often drive them to games even if it meant leaving work early.

Davis Sr. introduced his son to basketball at an early age, and by the time he was in fifth grade, Davis was already one of the best players in his age group. He continued to excel at basketball throughout middle school and high school, and ultimately chose to attend the University of Kentucky over offers from several other schools.

In his one season with the Kentucky Wildcats, Davis was named the National Player of the Year after averaging over 20 points per game and leading the team to the NCAA championship game. He then declared for the NBA draft, and was selected with the first overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans.
