There are 30 NBA teams in total. Eastern Conference
The Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association is made up of 15 teams. These teams are spread out over the eastern United States. The conference is split into three divisions: the Atlantic, Central, and Southeast.
Atlantic Division
The Atlantic Division is one of the three divisions in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It consists of five teams located in the Northeastern United States: the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, and Toronto Raptors.
Central Division
The Central Division is one of the three divisions in the East Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Central Division consists of five teams, the Chicago Bulls, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Detroit Pistons, the Indiana Pacers, and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Southeast Division
The NBA’s Southeast Division is made up of five teams: the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, and Washington Wizards.
The Hawks are based in Atlanta, Georgia, and play their home games at State Farm Arena. The team was founded in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, and they have won four conference titles and one NBA championship (1958).
The Charlotte Hornets were originally established in 1988 as the Charlotte Spirit, an expansion team that began play in the 1988–89 NBA season. The team was renamed the Hornets in 1991, and they won two conference titles before moving to New Orleans in 2002. The franchise returned to Charlotte in 2014. They play their home games at the Spectrum Center.
The Miami Heat are based in Miami, Florida, and play their home games at American Airlines Arena. The team was founded in 1988 as an expansion franchise, and they have won three conference titles and three NBA championships (2006, 2012, 2013).
The Orlando Magic were established in 1989 as an expansion franchise. They play their home games at Amway Center. The Magic have won five division titles but no conference championships or NBA titles.
The Washington Wizards were founded in 1961 as the Chicago Packers/Zephyrs. They moved to Baltimore in 1963 and became the Bullets; they changed their name to the Wizards in 1997. They play their home games at Capital One Arena and have won four conference championships but no NBA titles.
Western Conference
There are 15 teams in the Western Conference of the NBA. These teams are the Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, and Phoenix Suns.
Southwest Division
The Southwest Division is one of the three divisions in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The division consists of five teams, all located in the Southwestern United States.
The division was created at the start of the 2004–05 season, when the NBA realigned its teams into six divisions. The Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets both moved from the Midwest Division to the Southwest, while the New Orleans Pelicans (then known as the New Orleans Hornets) joined from the now-defunct Central Division.
As of the 2020–21 season, all five teams in the division have won at least one NBA championship. The Rockets have won four championships (in 1994, 1995, 2000, and 2021), while the Mavericks have won three (in 2011, 2012, and 2020). The Pelicans/Hornets franchise has won two championships (in 1988 and 2020), while both the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies have each won one championship (in 1999 and 2017 respectively).
