What is the All-NBA Team?
The All-NBA Team is an annual honor given to the best players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team is selected by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. The players who receive the most votes at each position are named to the team. There are three teams in total: the First Team, the Second Team, and the Third Team.
The First Team consists of the five players who receive the most votes. The Second Team consists of the next five players with the most votes, and so on. In order to be eligible for selection, a player must have played in at least 60 games during the NBA regular season.
The All-NBA Team was first announced in 1946. Since then, it has been announced every year except for two: 1950 and 2020. Some of the most decorated players in NBA history have been named to the All-NBA Team, including Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Magic Johnson.
How is the All-NBA Team Selected?
The All-NBA Team is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) honor given since the 1949–50 NBA season to the best performing players in the league during the regular season. The All-NBA Team originally had two teams, but since 1988 it is typically composed of three five-player lineups—a first, second, and third team.
Players receive five points for a first team vote, three points for a second team vote, and one point for a third team vote. The five players with the highest point totals make the first team, with the next five making the second team, and so on. In the case of a tie at the fifth position of any team, the roster is expanded. If there are still ties after expansion, they are broken by position: if there are two guards and one center remaining on an expansion list, they all make that team; if there are two forwards remaining on an expansion list, they both make that team; if there is only one player remaining on an expansion list at a given position (e.g., just one forward), then all eligible players at that position make that particular All-NBA Team (in other words: if Klay Thompson is the only shooting guard listed among those who received any votes when expanding from 11 spots to 13 spots for guards in 2019–20 due to ties among those with 4 points each behind Thompson’s 5 points, then Thompson AND Russell Westbrook would each be named to that season’s All-NBA First Team).
In past seasons when multiple players were tied in total points accumulated via votes at a given position (e.g., multiple centers in 1982–83), those who had played more games at that position during the regular season made that particular All-NBA Team over those who had played fewer games (e.g., Kelvin Cato made 2002–03’s All-NBA Third Team as a center over Donyell Marshall despite Marshall having more total points as he had also been voted as a power forward). players who spend significant time at multiple positions during the course of a season can be placed on more than one All-NBA positional squad; e.g., Calbert Cheaney was selected to 1993–94’s All-RookieTeam as both a small forward AND as a shooting guard because he had started some games at each of those positions for his NBA rookie season’s Indiana Pacers squad which made it to that year’s Eastern Conference Finals series; Cheaney would later appear on three additional All NBA squads during his 15 seasons of NBA play (1993–94 was also his lone season being selected to anAll-RookieTeam).
