The Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles, California. They compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and eccentrically the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The franchise began with the 1947 purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began playing in Minneapolis, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lauvers or Lakers. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before joining the rival Basketball Association of America (BAA), where they would win five of their next six championships, led by star George Mikan. After struggling financially in the late 1950s following Mikan’s retirement, they relocated to Los Angeles before these playoff defeats.
Led by Hall of Famers Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, Los Angeles made eighteen consecutive playoff appearances from 1967 to 1984. Through this period, they won five more championships under head coach Pat Riley. From 1985 to 1991 and again from 2000 to 2002, such as when Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant formed what many consider one of the best duos ever in professional basketball history,[8][9] Los Angeles had eleven consecutive seasons in which they won 50 or more games. As time passed, however, injuries and age began to set in on this very successful run; O’Neal departed for Miami in free agency after suffering from several recurring injuries.[10] Between 2003 and 2013 fueled by All-Star power forward Pau Gasol,[11] Kobe Bryant led a renewed dynasty that earned five championships between 2000 and 2010;[12][13] this second run included two three-peats between 2000–2002 and 2009–2010.[14][15] In 2012–13 season with Gasol again traded midseason to Memphis for younger brother Marc Gasol,[16] Steve Nash joining as free agent via sign-and-trade deal with Phoenix for two future first round picks that same year,[17] Dwight Howard arriving via free agency from Orlando one year later – forming what many dubbed as “superteam”[18][19][20][21], – while Mike Brown was hired as head coach becoming team’s third different head coach since Jackson left thirteen years prior – with all three having never previously coached any NBA game.[22] After losing out on re-signing both Gasol brothers that offseason outside Howard who was signed to five-year deal worth $88 million,[23] Nash returned home to Canada signing two-year deal with Toronto Raptors while Brown was subsequently fired five games into next season being replaced on an interim basis by Bernie Bickerstaff.[24] With Howard suffering serious back injury that limited him to just 41 regular season games while being beset with other various injuries throughout his lone season with team – losing first round playoff series against San Antonio Spurs 4–1 –[25], D’Antoni led team back into playoffs next year albeit barely sneaking into eighth seed after winning 48 games during regular season only earning them seventh seed due to tiebreaker rules over two teams that also finished 48–34 record.[26][27] On February 7th 2014 it was announced Midway through next season that D’Antoni had resigned from his post effective immediately being replaced by former player Byron Scott who would return for his second stint as head coach since 1998.[28][29]”
The 2008 NBA Finals were held June 5 through June 17, 2008 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California[1], home court of division rivals[2]Los Angeles Lakers (Western Conference) and Boston Celtics (Eastern Conference).[3][4]. It was televised nationally on ABC. The Celtics defeated Lakers 131–92 in Game 6 giving them a 4–2 series victory clinching their record seventeenth championship overall while denying Kobe Bryant his fourth Finals MVP trophy which would have tied him with Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan for second all time behind only Bill Russell’s eleven Finals MVPs.[5]”
