Past winners and their odds
The National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player Award is an annual award given since the 1955–56 season to the best performing player of the regular season. The winner receives the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, which is named in honor of the first commissioner (then president) of the NBA, who served from 1946 until his retirement in 1963.
Since its inception, the award has been given to 57 different players. Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki is the only European-born player to win the award, Nowitzki was born in West Germany (and raised in Dirk Nowitzkoping, Sweden). While he eventually became a U.S. citizen in 2014, he is still considered European by birth. Tim Duncan and Steve Nash are tied as the only players to have won the award twice as well—and each did so consecutively (Duncan in 2002 and 2003; Nash in 2005 and 2006). Bob Pettit remains the only player to have won with multiple teams—he first won while playing for the St. Louis Hawks in 1956, and then again with the Atlanta Hawks in 1958—and Karl Malone and LeBron James each has won with multiple franchises: Malone with the Utah Jazz (1997) and Los Angeles Lakers (1999); James with Miami Heat (2012 & 2013) and Cleveland Cavaliers (2016). Moses Malone is also tied for second place for receiving MVP honors three times throughout his career: 1979 with Houston Rockets, 1982 and 1983 as a member of Philadelphia 76ers; Hakeem Olajuwon is tied for second place for receiving MVP honors three times throughout his career as well: 1994 Houston Rockets, 1995 & 1996 Houston Rockets; Shaquille O’Neal is also tied for second place for receiving MVP honors three times throughout his career: 2000 Los Angeles Lakers, 2001 Los Angeles Lakers & 2002 Los Angeles Lakers. Wilt Chamberlain holds numerous records including being selected as one of two players to receive unanimous MVP honors four times throughout his career: 1960 Philadelphia Warriors, 1967 Philadelphia 76ers, 1968 Philadelphia 76ers & 1969 Los Angeles Lakers. He also holds five record for having received MVP honors solely based on point totals racked up during a season — most points ever (4133), most points per game average ever (50.4), most points ever averaged over an 82-game season (50.13), most points scored over any 70-game stretch within a single season
(3017) and finally, perhaps most impressive of all — he’s one of just two players to score 3000 points over the course of a single season! The other player? None other than Chamberlain’s equally impressive contemporary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who accomplished this incredible feet during the 1971-1972 campaign while playing small forward/center for UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team led by legendary head coach John Wooden.”

Why the announcement is delayed
The announcement of the NBA MVP is usually made during the NBA Finals, but this year it has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The reasoning behind the delay is that the NBA wants to wait until all of the players have had a chance to finish their seasons before making the announcement. This year, many players have opted out of playing in the playoffs, so the league wants to make sure that everyone has had a fair chance to compete before naming a winner.
The NBA MVP is typically awarded to the best player on the winning team in the Finals, but this year it is possible that a different player could be crowned MVP. This is because many of the league’s best players are not participating in the playoffs, so the award could go to someone who had a great regular season but didn’t make it to the Finals.
We may not know who will be named MVP until after the playoffs are over, but we will be sure to update this article as soon as an announcement is made.
