The Suns had the best regular season record in the NBA that year and were heavy favourites to win their first ever championship title. However, they ran into a red-hot Boston Celtics team led by future Hall of Famers Dave Cowens and John Havlicek. The Celtics went on to win the series in six games.
The Suns would make it back to the Finals in 1993, but they were unable to get over the hump and lost in six games to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
