The NBA Lottery
The NBA Lottery is a drawing held by the National Basketball Association (NBA) to determine the first three picks of the NBA draft. The lottery is held three to four weeks before the NBA draft. The teams that will receive the first three picks of the NBA draft are chosen through the lottery process. The 14 teams that did not make the playoffs are eligible to participate in the lottery.
What is the NBA Lottery?
The National Basketball Association (NBA) draft lottery is an annual event in which the teams who did not make the playoffs in the previous year participate in a lottery system to determine the draft order in the first round of the NBA draft. The NBA draft lottery started in 1985. In its current format, the lottery is composed of three drawings: the first drawing is for the team with the worst record, the second drawing is for the team with the second-worst record, and the third drawing is for the remaining non-playoff teams.
The team that wins each drawing will pick no lower than fourth overall. The four worst teams each have a chance at winning that year’s first overall pick, with odds determined by their record. For instance, a team with a worse record than any other has a 25% chance of winning, while one with better records will have smaller chances. The odds increase linearly; thus, if two teams’ records are identical and they are slotted to picks Nos. 8 and 9 respectively, each team would have an 8.8% chance of receiving either of those two picks (1-(7/14)). Under these odds, it is most likely that one of these two teams will receive pick No. 8 (56%), but it is also possible that neither does so (4%). Conversely, it would be very unlikely for both to get pick No. 9 (0.4%).

The NBA Lottery is a weighted system that determines the order in which teams will draft during the NBA Draft. The lottery is conducted prior to the draft, and the teams that do not make the playoffs are entered into the lottery. The team that wins the lottery gets the first pick in the draft, while the team with the worst record gets the last pick (unless it wins the lottery, in which case it moves up to the #4 pick).
There are a total of 14 balls numbered 1-14 in a standard hopper. The balls are drawn randomly one by one, with each draw determining a placing. The balls are drawn by a separate independent monitor. There are 1,000 total possible combinations when four numbers are drawn out of 14 without regard to order, and each combination has an equal probability of being drawn.

What is the NBA Draft Lottery?
The NBA Draft Lottery is an annual event held by the National Basketball Association (NBA), in which the teams who did not make the playoffs during the previous season participate in a lottery process to determine the draft order in the first round of the NBA draft. The lottery process gives all non-playoff teams a chance to land the top pick in the draft, and was implemented in 1985 to reduce incentivize tanking (i.e. losing on purpose to get a better draft pick).
The lottery consists of 14 ping-pong balls, numbered 1-14, which are placed in a machine and mixed up. There are 1,001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14 without replacement, and each combination is assigned a certain number of chances, or “out of 1,000” (OOM). The team with the worst record gets 250 OOM, while the team with the best record among non-playoff teams gets just five. The odds are then flattened out somewhat for teams with similar records; for example, the team with the second-worst record has 199 OOM.
Once the ping-pong balls are drawn, they are placed in order from worst to best record and assigned draft picks accordingly. In recent years, the NBA Draft Lottery has been televised live on ESPN; however, due to COVID-19 restrictions this year’s event will be held virtually. The 2020 NBA Draft Lottery will take place on Wednesday, August 20th at 8pm ET.
