Team History
The Oklahoma City Thunder is an American professional basketball team based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Thunder competes in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The team plays its home games at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The Thunder’s NBA G League affiliate is the Oklahoma City Blue, which it owned from 2008 until 2019. The Thunder are the only team in the big four major professional sports leagues based in Oklahoma City.
The team was established as the Seattle SuperSonics, an expansion team that joined the NBA for the 1967–68 season. The SuperSonics moved to OKC in 2008 after a settlement was reached between the state of Oklahoma and Clay Bennett’s ownership group following Bennett’s attempt to move the SuperSonics to his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. In Seattle, the SuperSonics qualified for the NBA playoffs 22 times, won their division six times, advanced to three NBA Finals, and won an NBA championship in 1979. In Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoff berth during the 2009–10 season. They acquired All-Star forward Kevin Durant in 2016 and became a perennial playoff contender throughout Durant’s tenure with the franchise until his departure following their appearance in his final NBA Finals with them in 2019 whereupon they then fell into rebuilding mode led by newly acquired All-Star point guard Chris Paul which culminated into them reaching Maurice Cheeks second career Finals appearance as coach leading up to his firing shortly after following that season which then saw him be replaced by Billy Donovan who has since led them back into annual playoff contention although they are yet to return to Finals under him so far despite having superstar Russell Westbrook on their roster which they look poised to rectify during this upcoming 2020-21 season having made several significant roster additions via free agency and trade most notably adding All-Star small forward Al Horford who will now be reunited with his former Boston Celtic teammate Irving along with also signing veteran shooting guard Trevor Ariza among others along with acquiring superstar swingman swingman Jimmy Butler via trade which has many believing that this will finally be their year to return to Finals and perhaps even win it all provided that all of these new pieces fit well together and gel quickly as chemistry will undoubtedly be key for this team if they want to achieve their ultimate goal this season.
