Has the NBA Season Started Yet?
Contents
It’s October, and the NBA Season is upon us. Some would say that the season starts too late, but we’re just happy that it’s here.
Introduction
It’s October 21, 2020. The NBA season is supposed to start on December 22, 2020. As of right now, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the season. Will it start on time? Will it be delayed? Will it be cancelled altogether? Nobody knows for sure.
The NBA has been through a lot this year. In July, the league finished up its 2019-2020 season in the Orlando bubble. The bubble was a big success and the league was able to finish its season without any Covid-19 related issues.
Now, the league is trying to figure out how to start its 2020-2021 season in the midst of a pandemic. It’s a tough situation. On one hand, the league wants to protect its players and staff from getting sick. On the other hand, it doesn’t want to lose any more money.
As of right now, it seems like the league is leaning towards starting the season on time. But we’ll have to wait and see what happens in the next few weeks.
What Happened Last Season?
The 2019-20 NBA season was supposed to tip off on October 22, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season was eventually scheduled to begin on December 22, but that date was also pushed back. As of now, the season is set to begin on February 18.
Last season, the Toronto Raptors won their first NBA championship in franchise history, defeating the Golden State Warriors in six games. The Raptors were led by Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, who averaged 28.5 points per game in the series. Leonard left the Raptors in free agency this offseason, signing with the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Warriors, who have won three of the last five NBA titles, will be looking to rebound this season after a disappointing campaign that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since 2012. All-Stars Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson missed significant time due to injury, and they will both be back at full strength this season.
Other teams that are expected to contend for a title this season include the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics. The Lakers added All-Star forward Anthony Davis in a trade with the Pelicans this offseason, while the Bucks and Celtics both have young rosters that are among the best in the league.
The NBA’s Newest Additions
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a professional men’s basketball league in North America, composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). It is one of the four professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, and is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world.
In its 71st season, the NBA is made up of eight divisions: the Atlantic, Central, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest, Pacific, Northeast, and Eastern. The league’s structure was last re-aligned in 2004 to encourage more competitive balance between teams. As of 2019, six NBA teams have yet to win an NBA championship: the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets, New Orleans Pelicans, Utah Jazz, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
The most recent expansion team to join the NBA are the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans (both previously known as the Charlotte Bobcats and New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets respectively), who rejoined the league in 2014. The Brooklyn Nets (formerly the New Jersey Nets) also rejoined the league that year as part of a plan to realign the league’s divisions.
How Will the Season Play Out?
It’s hard to predict how the NBA season will play out.
The pandemic has upended everything, and it’s unclear how things will shake out.
Will there be a shortened season? Will there be no fans in the stands?
It’s impossible to say for sure.
But one thing is certain: the 2020-2021 NBA season will be unlike any other.
Conclusion
After much discussion, it was decided that the NBA season will indeed start on December 22, 2020. This is much later than the usual October start date, but with the COVID pandemic still raging across the country, the NBA felt it was best to err on the side of caution. While some fans are disappointed that they will have to wait a bit longer for their favorite players to take the court again, others are relieved that the season will happen at all. At any rate, it looks like we can all look forward to some exciting basketball in the near future!
