The National Basketball Association will announce the sixth annual NBA Awards presented by Kia on Monday, June 24 at 9 p.m. ET on TNT. The show will take place at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

MVP

The National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player Award is an annual award given by the NBA to the best performing player of the regular season. The winner receive the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, which is named in honor of the first commissioner (then president) of the NBA, who served from 1946 until 1963. The award was established by the Board of Governors of the NBA in 1955 and Bill Russell is its first recipient.

Since its inception, the award has been given to 31 different players. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James have won the most MVP awards with six each; they are tied for second most all-time with Michael Jordan, who also won six MVP awards. Karl Malone and Wilt Chamberlain have both five MVP awards; Malone is third all-time, while Chamberlain is fourth. Russell Westbrook and Steve Nash have both won the award three times; Nash is fifth all-time, while Westbrook is tied for sixth with Bob Pettit—all three were awarded during their tenure with the Phoenix Suns. James Harden, Dirk Nowitzki, Moses Malone and Larry Bird have all won it twice

The most recent recipient of the award is Giannis Antetokounmpo who was given the award at the end of the 2018–19 season.

Defensive Player of the Year

This year’s Defensive Player of the Year award is wide open, with a number of players having put up strong numbers on the defensive end of the court. The frontrunners for the award are Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz and Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans, but a number of other players have also been in contention for the honor.

The winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award will be announced at the NBA Awards show on June 25.

Rookie of the Year

Rookie of the Year will be announced at the NBA Awards show on TNT on Monday, June 24.

Sixth Man of the Year

This award is given to the league’s best player in a reserve role. The players who are considered for this award primarily come off the bench, but there are some starters who are also eligible. It is important to note that a player cannot win both this award and Most Improved Player in the same season. The leading candidates for this year’s award are:

Most Improved Player

The NBA Most Improved Player Award is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given to the league’s most improved player. The winner is selected by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom cast a vote for first, second and third place selections. Each first-place vote is worth five points, each second-place vote is worth three points, and each third-place vote is worth one point. The player with the highest point total, regardless of the number of first-place votes, wins the award.

Since its inception, the award has been given to 31 different players. No player has ever won the award twice. The most recent recipient is Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors.

Coach of the Year

The National Basketball Association’s Coach of the Year Award is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given since the 1962–63 NBA season. The winner receives the Red Auerbach Trophy, named in honor of the head coach who led the Boston Celtics to nine NBA championships from 1956 to 1966. The winner is selected at the end of the regular season by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada.
