It’s no secret that the NBA is a business. Players are constantly getting paid, whether it’s through their contract or endorsement deals. So, who got the highest contract in the NBA?
Kevin Durant- 10 years, $300 million
Durant’s agent, Rich Kleiman, announced the agreement on Twitter, calling it a “historic day” for both Durant and the Warriors.
The 10-year contract is the longest in NBA history and is worth an unprecedented $300 million, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal includes a player option after Year 9, sources told Wojnarowski.
Dollars aside, the total compensation Durant will receive over the life of the deal is estimated to be worth more than $560 million when factoring in his Nike endorsement earnings and other off-court income sources, according to Forbes.
Russell Westbrook- 3 years, $85.7 million
In September of 2017, Russell Westbrook signed a contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The deal is worth $85.7 million over three years and makes Westbrook the highest paid player in the NBA.
Westbrook’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of the 2017-2018 season, but the extension will keep him with the Thunder through the 2020-2021 season.
The extension includes a player option for 2021-2022, which would allow Westbrook to become a free agent again in 2022. If he opts out, he would be eligible for a max contract worth 35% of the salary cap, which is projected to be around $221 million in 2022.
In 2016-2017, Westbrook had one of the best seasons in NBA history, averaging a triple-double for the entire season. He became only the second player ever to do so, joining Oscar Robertson.
Westbrook’s extension is worth more than $28 million per year, making him the highest paid player in the NBA. He will make $26.5 million in 2018-2019, $28 million in 2019-2020, and $31 million in 2020-2021.
DeMar DeRozan- 5 years, $139 million
In July 2016, the Toronto Raptors and DeMar DeRozan agreed on a contract extension that will keep the All-Star shooting guard in Canada through the 2020-2021 season. The extension is worth $139 million over five years, making it the most lucrative contract in team history.
DeRozan has been with the Raptors since they drafted him ninth overall in 2009. He has helped lead the team to four consecutive playoff appearances, and was named to the All-Star team for the first time in 2015.
The 27-year-old is coming off of a career year in which he averaged 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He has career averages of 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.
Mike Conley- 5 years, $153 million
The Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley signed the richest contract in NBA history, a five-year deal worth $153 million, according to his agent, Wallace Prather. The deal will keep Conley in Memphis through the 2020-21 season.
Conley, 28, was selected by the Grizzlies with the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. He has averaged 13.8 points and 5.6 assists in his nine-year career, all with Memphis.
The five-time All-Star has been an integral part of the Grizzlies’ success over the past few years, helping them reach the playoffs six times. Conley averaged a career-high 20.5 points per game last season while also setting career highs in assists (6.3), steals (1.3) and three-point shooting percentage (.424).
Al Horford- 4 years, $113 million
Al Horford signed a four-year, $113 million deal with the Boston Celtics in July of 2016. The contract includes a player option for the fourth year.
