He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks with the sixth overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft, becoming only the second Chinese player to be selected in an NBA draft. In July 2008, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets. He has also played for the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, and Orlando Magic.
Standing at 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m), he plays both power forward and center positions. Yi’s game is compared to Dirk Nowitzki’s because of his shooting ability as a big man. He was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in September 2017.
In February 2005, at age 17, Yi joined the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).[3] In his rookie season he helped lead his team to victory in the CBA championship game.[4][5] In 32 games he averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds per game.[6] His team once again reached the Finals in 2006–07, but lost to their arch-rival Beijing Ducks in a hard-fought series that went to five games.[7] In 50 games during the regular season he averaged 19 points and 9 rebounds per game.[8]
In May 2007, Yi declared himself eligible for the 2007 NBA draft,[9] becoming only the second player from China after Yao Ming to do so. He was selected with the sixth overall pick by Milwaukee Bucks in what GM Larry Harris called “a tough decision”.[10][11][12]
