The teams
As of the 2018-19 NHL season, there are seven Canadian teams in the NHL: the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets.
The first Canadian team in the NHL was the Montreal Canadiens, who joined the league in 1917. The most recent Canadian team to join the league was the Ottawa Senators, who began play in 1992.
There are three Canadian teams in each of the league’s two divisions that contain all seven Canadian teams: the Atlantic Division and the Pacific Division. Of those three teams, only one (the Montreal Canadiens) is in a division that also contains five American teams.
The fans
The fans are absolutely amazing. No matter where you go in Canada, you will find people who are passionate about the game of hockey. In fact, many Canadians grow up playing the sport and it is not uncommon for young boys and girls to dream of one day playing in the NHL.
There are seven Canadian teams in the NHL: the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. These seven teams are some of the most popular in the league and their fans are some of the most dedicated.
Canadians take great pride in their country and their hockey teams. When a Canadian team is doing well, it can be a source of great national pride. Similarly, when a Canadian team is struggling, it can be a source of great disappointment.
The NHL in the United States
The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league in North America, currently comprising 31 teams: 24 in the United States and 7 in Canada. The Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America, is awarded annually to the playoff champion at the end of each season.
The teams
While there are 30 teams in the National Hockey League, only 24 of them are based in the United States. let’s take a look at where all of these American teams are located.
There are three teams in the Northeast: the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, and New York Rangers. In the Patrick Division (which is part of the Eastern Conference), we have the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers. The New Jersey Devils play in the Metropolitan Division (also part of the Eastern Conference).
There are four teams in the Midwest: the Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, and St. Louis Blues.
There are also four teams in what’s considered to be the West: the Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Los Angeles Kings, and Phoenix Coyotes. The final two teams in the United States playing in the NHL are both located in Florida: The Tampa Bay Lightning and Miami Dolphins
The fans
It’s no secret that many NHL fans in the United States are actually fans of Canadian teams. In fact, according to a recent poll, nearly 30% of NHL fans in the US say they support a Canadian team. That’s a pretty significant number, especially when you consider that there are only seven Canadian teams in the NHL.
So why do so many American NHL fans support Canadian teams? There are a few theories. First, it could be because many of the best players in the NHL are Canadian. It’s no coincidence that eight of the last ten Stanley Cup winners have had at least one Canadian on their roster.
Another reason may be that Canadian teams tend to be more successful than their American counterparts. Since the 2005-06 season, only two American teams have won the Stanley Cup (the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks). In contrast, six different Canadian teams have won it during that same time period.
Whatever the reason, it’s clear that there is a strong bond between American NHL fans and Canadian teams. And with the recent addition of the Vegas Golden Knights, that bond is only going to become stronger.
