How many teams make the playoffs?

What is the playoff format?

The top three teams in each division make the playoffs, as well as the next two best teams in the conference, regardless of division. Just like in the divisional rounds, home ice advantage goes to whichever team had a better regular season record. The winners of each semifinal series then meet in their conference’s championship series.

The conference champions then face off against each other in the Stanley Cup Final. Home ice advantage for this round goes to whichever team had a better regular season record out of the two — even if one team is coming from the Eastern Conference while their opponent is coming from the Western Conference.
