How many teams make the playoffs?
The Stanley Cup Playoffs (French: Les séries éliminatoires de la Coupe Stanley) is an elimination tournament in the National Hockey League (NHL) consisting of four rounds of best-of-seven series to determine the league champion and the winner of the Stanley Cup. Eight teams from each of the two conferences qualify for the playoffs based on regular season points totals. The final round, the Stanley Cup Finals, is played between the conference champions and determines the winner of the Stanley Cup.
What is the playoff format?
The top three teams in each division make the playoffs, as well as the next two best teams in the conference, regardless of division. The first two rounds of the playoffs are divisional, meaning that in each series, the lower-seeded team will play one of its division rivals. For example, if the Vancouver Canucks (the Western Conference’s third seed) were to play the Calgary Flames (the conference’s sixth seed), they would do so in the first round.
The third seed plays the sixth seed and the fourth seed plays the fifth seed. In each series, the higher-seeded team plays host to Games 1, 2, 5 and 7 (if necessary), while their lower-seeded opponent hosts Games 3, 4 and 6 (if necessary). The winners of each divisional series advance to their respective conference’s semifinals.
In the semifinals, Seeds 1 and 2 are matched up against each other while Seeds 3 and 4 face off against each other. Just like in the divisional rounds, home ice advantage goes to whichever team had a better regular season record. The winners of each semifinal series then meet in their conference’s championship series.
The conference champions then face off against each other in the Stanley Cup Final. Home ice advantage for this round goes to whichever team had a better regular season record out of the two — even if one team is coming from the Eastern Conference while their opponent is coming from the Western Conference.
