NHL Entry Draft
The 2019 NHL Entry Draft will be held on June 21–22, 2019, at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. The draft will consist of seven rounds of selection, with each of the 31 teams possessing one pick in each round.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the NHL Entry Draft, players must be born on or after January 1st, 1996. As of the 2019 draft, players who are 23 years old or older are no longer eligible.
In order to encourage more young players to enter the League, the NHL increased the draft age from 20 to 21 in 1966. In 1974, the age was lowered to 19 and then increased again to 20 in 1979. The current rules were put in place in 1995.
Format
Since the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, the draft has consisted of seven rounds. In total, 217 prospects are selected each year.
The NHL uses a “snake” draft format, meaning that the order of picks reverses after each round — so the team with the first overall pick in Round 1 would have the last pick in Round 2 (and vice versa).
The only exceptions to this are when two or more teams have traded draft positions, as those teams will draft in their new slots.
Draft Lottery
The NHL Entry Draft Lottery is an annual event held by the National Hockey League (NHL) that allows teams who have missed the playoffs to win the right to select first overall in the NHL Entry Draft. The lottery is held prior to the NHL Entry Draft, which is usually held in late June. The draft lottery was introduced in 1995, and its results are based on a combination of team performance and luck.
The team that wins the Stanley Cup automatically gets the 30th and final pick in the first round of the draft, while the rest of the teams are slotted into positions 1-29 based on their regular season record. However, if a team wins the Stanley Cup and also had one of the league’s worst records that season (such as happened with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996), then they would only get the 31st overall pick (the last pick of the first round). In this case, the 30th pick would go to whomever won that year’s draft lottery.

The 2019 NHL Entry Draft will be the 55th NHL Entry Draft. It will be held on June 21–22, 2019, at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Vancouver Canucks will host the draft for the second time in franchise history, and the first time since 2006.
